And not just because he's savvy enough to stick an E30 vintage M3 on the album cover:
Frank Ocean is a member of Odd Future, which is really Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, the gore/hiphop (sickhop?) group that famously appeared on Jimmy Fallon's show a few weeks ago and therefore made it impossible for me to write about them in this space (I won't take Jimmy's musical sloppies). I'm not that into Tyler, the Creator or Earl Sweatshirt. But Frank Ocean is on to something here. I don't know if he's related to Billy Ocean or Danny Ocean, but he makes interesting R&B/soul music with an indie rock sensibility and a Ghostfacian penchant for storytelling ("I blame it on the model broad with the Hollywood smile/Stripper booty and a rack like wow"), sort of a laid-back Kid Cudi vibe but with romance and heartbreak replacing all the psychoanalytical melodrama. This is both music to make love to your old lady by and music that will draw approving nods from beatnerds, sneakerfreaks, exurban teenagers, and (in about a month) hipsters alike.
And it's free. Get it now before Don Henley finds out about the sample on "American Wedding" and shuts this thing down.

i observed a plethora of hipstericus americus in the wild at the 930 club last night. our skinny jean and beard surplus is the envy of the developed world.
My pick for the US Open: The most obscure South African available.
I like hipsters but I don't understand skinny jeans. Why would anyone want to wear their girlfriend's pants?
Geoff just sealed the deal on Tiger's 15th major.
i'm not making any more golf predictions. i clearly have no idea what i'm talking about.
Karl Malone's 6-foot-4, 284 pound son is a sophomore in high school.
maybe i'm reading the wrong stuff, but it seems to me the bulls winning the east isn't getting nearly as much run as it should.
It was not covered at all in The Christian Science Monitor nor was it mentioned in Redbook.
I will be attending Caps - Rangers Game 1. Moist.
The mainstream Bulls attention has been 90% focused on Derrick Rose hype. Basically everyone is looking for a non-LeBron savior. Durant has all the attention 6 months ago, but somehow he's lost it all to Rose.
The statistical community has backlashed against Rose and there are ongoing skirmishes on this front.
Statistical skirmishes sound scary.
sample size, motherfucker!
sensitivity, you asshole!
you're both fucking idiots - confidence intervals!
that's all i got.
but jerry, if you'd like to pen an actual statistical skirmish story, we'd be happy to host it here at g:tb. or, better, you could start your own blog.
dan patrick: "if you're a red sox fan, you kinda have to say 'our cheaters were better than the yankees cheaters'"
and everyone else's cheaters, too.
sad but true.
The skirmishes are kind of like "I don't need stats. I watch the games" vs. "I use stats and I watch the games."
Rose will win the MVP because the award has a significant storyline element to it and Rose has by far the best story. I guess that's OK.
I am considering starting my own blog and I do have some basketball stats stuff queued up in my head.
It's a pretty interesting field, especially because the majority of the baseball stuff is fairly mature and any new developments are too complicated to understand.
On the sameday freeDarko shuts its doors, it would be fun to see a houseJerry open up shop....
What will Jerry do without all of my contributions?
In other news, this will now be haunting my dreams:
http://chickswithstevebuscemeyes.tumblr.com/
i saw that tumblr over the weekend, geoff. ridiculous. tumblr is sublime.
How bad did Rory McIlroy choke? Not only was his 80 the worst round of the day (by two strokes), it was also the worst round of the weekend, and tied for the second worst round of the entire tournament (with Sandy Lyle and Craig Stadler). The next time he has the lead on Sunday in a major should be good times.
I'd like to see Rory paired with Dustin Johnson. It wouldn't be too surprising if the PGA obliged for the 1st 2 rounds.
I did enjoy seeing his drive land between 2 houses. We've all been there, but you don't get to see it on TV too often.
And Tiger is approaching Bobby Knight in lack of tolerance for BS interview questions.
I've watched every Masters since 1985ish...and I didn't even know there were houses on some of the holes until Rory's exploits.
agreed - the tee shot on 10 may well be the worst shot i've ever seen at the masters.
So it WAS worse than Phil's shot off a catering tent?
they are "cabins" and are on the angc property....
have yet to see a good replay of 10tee shot but i believe he just pulled it a bit and hit a branch knocking the ball hard left...i don't think he hit it nearly as badly as the end spot portrayed...but yes, still shitty
great call on the dustin/rory pairing - i really think you'll see that at the us open - those guys love getting funny with the pairings....
There's not enough talk about Tiger's second shot on #8. Having the balls to attempt that shot is nearly as impressive as pulling to off.
You can watch it if you clink on the score on Tiger's 8th on this page:
http://www.masters.com/en_US/scores/index.html
am i wrong on the 10 tee assessment? amazing if he hit it that poorly.
It ended up where a low screaming duck hook would...but it appeared to take off with a relatively normal trajectory, so I think you're right...garden variety pull hook that hit the wrong side of a tree.
to clarify, the shot was the worst result of any shot i've ever seen at the masters, even the ones that went into rae's creek.
Nevermind. I just watched it again on Masters.com and its dead left from impact. Amateur hour.
that shot is ridonkulous. his 2nd on 15 the day before also ridonkulous.
i have the masters blues - it was a great tourney. many on the radio are saying "the best ever" which is complete bullshit. it should have been but instead was merely "excellent." thanks for disappointing yet again tiger. loser.
Yeah, if Tiger or someone of consequence (even Cabrera) had won, it could have been in the conversation for best ever...but its hard to fuck with '86. Jack wins, but Seve, Kite, Norman, and Langer are all within a stroke of the lead post Amen corner on Sunday. Also awesome was Phil's first win in '04 at Augusta.
The best final Sunday of a major in somewhat recent memory is the '99 US Open. Payne Stewart wins making a 20 footer on 18, fights it out with Phil for 18 holes, and Tiger, Vijay and Duval (who was #1 in the world at the time) were all within a stroke of the lead at some point on the back nine.
WNBA draft will occur sometime today. Get excited.
'99 Open - had just moved to Pinehurst...watched on Sunday in front of TV but rest of week there...have that pic of Payne after sinking putt right behind me here in office...yes - a classic...don't forget about the f'ing bomb he made on 16 and then a another 5+ footer on 17 (with phil missing)...unreal. The tiger/torrey pines wasn't too shabby either.
Yeah, Tiger Torrey Pines was awesome, though it was pretty much just Eldrick and Rocco, with a splash of Westwood crapping himself.
Tiger versus Bob May in the PGA was surprisingly good theater.
And just the thought of Shaun Micheel holding off Alex Cejka at Oak Hill gives me goosebumps.
Thanks to Twitter I know that Maya Moore went first in the WNBA draft. She was drafted by Minnesota. 6 bottles of Bell's Two-Hearted to anyone who can name their mascot without looking it up.
Are they they Minnesota Gasche?
Sadly no.
I know the answer. Not sure if I'm happy about that.
And how about Bill Simmons saying that Maya Moore might be able to play in the NBA on his podcast? He is really losing it.
She could...at halftime of a Wiz-Bucks game.
lynx, baby! i'll embarrass myself any time for bell's two hearted.
i'm enjoying paul simon's new record. yeah, that's right.
commence short old guy jokes.
Rob, I'll bring that by the week after never. I'll bring the grandkids.
Every time we go to Food Emporium the zwoman sings part of "Feelin Groovy" but that's because we walk under the 59th Street bridge. Very difficult to justify making a Paul Simon call otherwise.
I also have newfound respect for anyone with more than one kid, especially those with twins, triplets, etc. (even Geoff). I am so sleep deprived that I halucinate in my office.
you have a place called 'food emporium'? do you have a hard time resisting wooderson jokes when you go there?
Twins almost ended me. I don't really remember anything from October of 2009 through August of 2010. Not kidding.
Z--two words: Night nurse. They're expensive as hell, but worth it.
is that what you call them - "night nurses?"
Like I said...expensive...but worth it.
I always roll in E-mode. Seriously, you never heard of Food Emporium? Someone made a store just for me ... Someone's got my kind of quality ... Someone got the message that people like things better ... no?
Shoe City? http://bit.ly/hnNyHM
The Celtics benched their 4 best players and they're up 6 against the Wiz.
Brent Barry just said,
"If you're a Chicago fan, you're loving it right now because not only do you have Derrick Rose, you also now have Courtney Vandersloot."
hard to argue with that, really
zman - thanks for the frank ocean. finally got to listen to it this evening. dig it.
I told you that you should listen to it! Some day I will figure out why the Sleigh Bells are good and I will explain it here, but right now their goodness is still a mystery.
haven't listened to frank ocean yet. still trying to find an "old lady" to bang.
heading to williamsburg next week with the family: any advice for best things to do with them? i haven't been back in a LONG time.
Dave - you should buy them skinny jeans and expensive flannel shirts made to look they came from a thrift store.
You meant Brooklyn, right?
THAT would be some spring break-- sounds like the plot of "vacation iv."
Worst name for a website geared towards guys --- guyism.com. Awful name, wtf were they thinking.
/end random note/
rhymes with "jism."
I definitely have the whole Lent thing backwards. Next year I'm doing it this way.
