Cumbia the New Punk

After an excellent day spent in Williamsburg celebrating coming home by drinking way too much (and fuck Andrew Huberman), laughing the precisely correct amount, listening to some live music, meeting Outer Banks star and W&M Class of '87 member Chip Esten, and watching exactly zero football, my wife and I headed to Richmond on Sunday.

The purpose of our trip to the capital of the Commonwealth was to spend time with our kid, who turned 21 on Saturday. The timing of that celebration aligned nicely with the final day of the Richmond Folk Festival, a nice little intersection of interests.

We got there towards the end of the day, owing to the kidlet's dance rehearsal schedule, but we got to hear some imbube from South Africa before heading to the main stage for the finale. Which blew our minds.

Son Rompe Pera is a collective from the suburbs of Mexico City. They play a mesmerizing mix of traditional marimba, cumbia, punk, funk, and rock music. NPR called them "psychobilly marimberos". The nearest analog my feeble brain could conjure was that of a Mexican Red Baraat, a similar melding of traditional and modern wrapped in a high-energy body-moving package. They got alllll the white hippies on their feet in Richmond's gorgeous Riverfront Park.

Here's a taste of the band from an NPR Tiny Desk feature:

And here are a handful of poorly-filmed videos from our vantage point. In particular, the clip of my kid and her roommate Erin rocking out gave me some serious joy.

And you gotta click the link to see my kid get her groove on.

  4. The fan-phones replays of Davante Adams and the cameraman... misdemeanor assault seems like a lot. Dude walked right in front of/into him as he was walking into the tunnel. You have to hold players accountable, but you also need to keep crew from getting right square in harm's way.

  5. Just saw RIP Willie as a trending twitter topic. I was relieved to learn it's neither the guy Dave fellates in his favorite joke nor Willie Nelson.

  9. "23-year-old "American Idol" runner-up Willie Spence has died following a car crash "

I suppose it was a bit insensitive to be thankful we didn't lose the 90 year old whose legacy is secure.

  27. buffs getting 15.5 tomorrow at home against cal. colorado hasn’t lost by fewer than 23 points this season. parents weekend is a notoriously rowdy crowd, tho. take that into consideration before you lay your hard-earned cash down.

  33. After 2 1/2 years, COVID finally caught up to me. So I find myself isolated from family on the top floor of our very old house with TV in playoff baseball season, the only time I watch baseball (and my fam isn’t subjected to it), and no Sunday work commitments. It’s not all bad. So far everyone else is fine, too. Here’s to hoping that remains so.

  37. I had as a good a birthday celebration this weekend as possible. Wife and I got away for Friday and Saturday. Omakase on Friday night. One of the better meals I’ve had in a very long time. Drinks at a dive bar after. Saturday was a day of drinks, shopping and snacking throughout Winter Park followed by catching the second half of the 3:30 CFB games (which were epic) and then Pusha T in concert. Push killed it. We finished up the night with a few more drinks and late night pizza slices. Woke up this morning and met up with the kid and her soccer team where we beat Winter Park FC 6-0. Good times. Might need a little extra water the next few days.
