Thank You Alt Nation - TR's 6-pack.

I may have mentioned this already, but my kids like to listen to Alt Nation in the car. All the time. They know every song, and love those with a curse in it, probably for that reason alone. Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons, Turn by The Wombats and (F*ck A) Silver Lining by Panic @ the Disco are three examples. I have stopped caring about the language, to be honest. I distinctly remember being fired up when hearing "you son of a bitch" at a very young age during Devil Went Down to Georgia. And I remember giggling when my mom played the Chorus Line soundtrack song "Tits and Ass" on vinyl. So who am I to judge? Oh right, I'm their Dad. I should judge a little bit. Whatever.

Back to the topic. Alt Nation is a decent station to have in the preset mix. Most of the new artists are at least somewhat tolerable.  I also enjoy when I hear tunes from "classic" bands like MGMT, The Killers and Vampire Weekend. The point here is that the station introduces me to a lot of new tunes that I end up digging. Sometimes I'll dive down the rabbit hole to learn more about the band.

So I'll fess up and admit I'm stealing Whitney's 6-pack theme, because lazy. I'm here today to write about Wallows. They are a trio from Los Angeles that goes all the way back to the early 10's. I really really dig their tune being played on Alt Nation right now. It is called Pictures of Girls. The video is below. The song has a great summery, Beach Boys-meets-Vampire Weekend ethereal vibe to it.

My second favorite tune on Wallows' new six-song EP is 1980's Horror Film. Witty lyrics that belie the song's tone. Reminds of old Ben Folds Five songs. Who else could slide the lyrics "and you think Rockford Files is cool" into a song so seamlessly? A lot of people, I guess. But he/they did it better than most.

Below is Pleaser, Wallows' first "hit," at least to some young folks in SoCal. It is a tune from way back in '17. Raw, yet catchy. Like my STDs!

Here is another '17 tune that's fun...

...and here's one more from the Spring EP (which has Pictures of Girls and 1980's Horror Film):

Lastly, here is them doing a tune called Pulling Leaves Off Trees. It's amusing that they make the video look like it was shot with an 80's video camera. Stranger Things ripple effect, I guess. Enjoy!

  2. the wallows seem tolerable (perhaps because i am hungover) but i want to smack that face off their faces in the first video.

  3. Manny being Manny. Dave gonna Dave.

Whit, if your missed Mex giving the world (or the 80 Met fans watching last night) the Pi Lam bird last night, check it out on the twitters

  4. Alt Nation is one of my SiriusXM presets and I enjoy it. Also introduces me to a number of new bands and makes my many many hours in the car more tolerable.

  6. Deep Cuts is a must, Whit. Outlaw Country is fun too. Raw Dog Comedy is fun when you are on a long drive and don’t have kids in the car.

  7. Noted x 3

I do like Outlaw Country. I’ve heard Jason Isbell and Old 97’s there lately.

I scan through all the comedy channels. Comedy Greats is another keeper. You have to sift through some Sinbad or Louie Anderson but then you’ll get Carlin, Pryor, old Robin Williams, or Mitch Hedberg and then you win Yahtzee.

  8. Deep Tracks always seems to be stuck on Moodly Blues or Yes when I tune in. Like a 25 min version. But I’ll retry.

And the comedy stations are likely playing less Cosby these days.

  9. Spent the afternoon at a Big Green Egg Fest with wife and friend. Great time. Tons of different types of food all included in your price of admission and beers supplied by Boulevard Brewing. Solid Saturday.

  10. Whit, I have a lot of the same presets.
    You're missing SiriusXM Fly = 90's and early 2000's hip-hop and R&B
    It's one of my favs

  11. i've got sirius xmu on preset, as well.

  12. I dadded the hell out of zson all day, including a trip to our fishing hole where I saw the biggest bass I've ever seen in the wild. It wanted nothing to do with our bait. I also saw a kid spacing out while playing third base which resulting in him taking a ball to the crotch. It was weakly thrown but everyone went "ooooooh" when it happened. We are also now the owners of a betta fish. It's underwhelming.

  13. I also just got a Sonos hooked up in my new pad yesterday. It’s got more competition for your means of listening pleasure than that boner-inducing first installation of Sonos in my house years ago, but it still holds up.

  14. catch that bass zman, catch that bass!

  15. Lithium. Classic Rewind. There is also a Live Channel -all music, all live, all the time. It's in the 300's I believe. Will tell ya next time I'm in the vee-hickle. I've got a great feature on my radio - anytime I hear one of my songs or fave bands, I store it. It holds 20'ish or so bands and/or songs, but better off putting in bands. Anytime one of my bands is playing on any station, it lets me know on the screen. It's pretty dope. You guys probably have had the same thing forever but I'm just late to the party as usual.
My wife is in a puzzle rabbit hole. She has a problem.

  16. I don't have satellite radio, I chose to take my money and spend it instead on ten coats of hand rubber orange lacquer and full fucking race cams.

  17. i don't understand what it means either way

  18. Whit come sit in my sweet spot chair and listen to Perpetual Change. You'll stop hating on Yes.

  19. zfamily went to dinner with zson's best friend and his family. zson and friend got into a pepper fight, both wound up with eyes full of pepper which was made worse when they rubbed said eyes with peppery fingers. After that they started behaving badly.

  20. michelle wolf, who's headlining this evening's white house correspondents' dinner (and was featured on the daily show with trevor noah) is a 2007 w&m grad who ran track for the tribe. she also worked for bear stearns and jp morgan chase before realizing she was too funny to deal with that life.

  21. if you're on the facebook, kexp did a live in-studio session with dessa this afternoon that's amazing both for the music and for the discussion. she's a goddamn genius with a lyrical gift.

  22. I did not see Terry Rozier turning into the player he’s already become. The Celtics are dumb loaded for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  23. yeah. their rotation reserves next year could be rozier, morris, baynes, ojeleye, and smart. all of whom have made big plays in a game 7 tonight. with brown and tatum growing up, horford still in his prime, and kyrie and hayward. all led by the best coach in the league. that'll be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  24. oh, and a bunch of high draft picks still to use.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Michelle Wolf’s story is impressive. I saw her do Seth Rogen’s Hilarity for Charity, and it was not good at all (IMO). Not sure if there is better material out there.

  26. Just watched Atomic Blonde. The soundtrack is best of and the movie is close to. Charlize. My goodness!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was talking to my wife about Charlize earlier tonight. Her before she cuts her hair in Devils Advocate...

    ReplyDelete
  28. yes is awful (besides 90214) and charlize theron tends to be homely . . . except in fury road.

    ReplyDelete
  29. All Tristan Thompson had to do was cheat on Khloe?

Watching Oladipo excel hurts my feelings. Not quite sure why I still care about the Magic at this point. I feel like I should pull a Rob and just pick a new NBA team. I’d probably go New Orleans too. I love that city and I love Anthony Davis. I do have an affection for Indiana too because Nate McMillan and I played point guard at the same college. He was a little better than me though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. To be clear, I was referring to Rob dumping the racial slurs.

  31. The Yes album Dave (aka Catpell) refers to is 90125. The TV show he loves and merged incorrectly with the Yes album is Beverly Hills 90210.

But he is most wrong about Charlize Theron. She is the kind of beautiful that stops traffic, and grandfather clocks, and war between nations.

Also, she was awesome on Arrested Development.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I call into question everything said by someone who alleges that Charlize Theron is homely. One such as this has zero credibility.

  33. First Kashmir and now this. He is the only male alive between the ages of 40 and 60 tuat can make such a claim I wholeheartedly believe. This will go into my journal.

  34. That.
Sippin Crown Northern Harvest Rye and ginger.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh yeah. Dave is an idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I just spent 45 mins trying to pare down my list to get to the 10 albums on that goofy FB challenge.
And I'm still not sure it's right.

    ReplyDelete
  37. write it as a post here, instead. it'll be more fun. then you can link to it on facebook. which will mean that you'll have to admit to people that you know us. which, okay, i understand why you might think twice about that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I would be happy to post it on GTB, but def not linking to FB.
And, I have both Michael (Off the Wall) and Janet (Rhythm Nation) Jackson on the list.
The only recent album on my list Vampire Weekend.
Had to cut Sgt. Peppers--which was basically part of the soundtrack from my childhood.
    This is a tough exercise

Everyone needs to make their lists and post them--and let me know how easy or tough it was to come up with only 10

    ReplyDelete
  39. All I know is Dave's list sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm not on Facebook. What's the list?

  41. Tough day for my U8 travel baseball team. We lost 7-4 and 14-5. Other team had his 8 y/o kids bunting for hits, which is such bullshit, bush league crap for that age.

I yelled at the other team's first base coach for talking to my first baseman when our pitcher was in his wind-up. I yelled at my kid for yelling at his second baseman from the pitcher's mound for making a bad error. And I yelled at my whole team for not caring during the second game.

    Scotch is calming me down.

  42. 10 albums that have/had a big influence on you and you still play
and, don't ever join FB, Zman--it's evil

    ReplyDelete
  43. Here's my 10 (not in any specific order):

    1. Carole King, Tapestry
    2. Michael Jackson, Off the Wall
    3. REM, Life's Rich Pageant
    4. U2, Joshua Tree
    5. Janet Jackson, Rhythm Nation
    6. Foo Fighters, The Colour and the Shape
    7. Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend
    8. Alanis, Jagged Little Pill
    9. Led Zeppelin, Houses of the Holy
    10. Paul Simon, Graceland

    ReplyDelete
  44. i wrote that as a post a few years ago. i feel like i'm done.

  45. My list would be my 10 favorite Rusted Root bootlegs

    ReplyDelete
  46. With some Jethro Tull sprinkled in.

    ReplyDelete
  47. If you added some Billy Joel you would make Dave’s Hmhead explode. That might make it meaningful enough to make the list.
