Norge Gheorghe

From the Norwegian art collective Kreativiteket (like you don't know from Kreativiteket), comes among the more Gheorghey works of public art in recent memory. The village of Orje, Norway is the unlikely keeper of the legacy of Monty Python's Ministry of Silly Walks.

Flights to Oslo start at a reasonable $1309 from DC. I think we owe it to ourselves to make this happen.

  1. First episode of new season of Mad Men was one of the worst episodes the show has ever had. Weak, to quite weak.

  2. The Norwegian crew team has descended upon my gym. Not quite as overwhelming in their presence as the Canadian crew team but still pretty annoying. I did feel bad for the one ginger Norwegian amongst all the blondies.

  3. I expect the next post to be about Croaker or Toano.

  4. Geoff just pissed off the eleven residents of Lightfoot, whose town he excluded.

  5. The Accutron pitch and Don's entrance scene were excellent. Any scene involving Sterling is gold.

  6. I thought that "Croaker Norge" was one place based on the exit ramp signage ... and because I'm stupid.

  7. Sorry, people of Lightfoot...you toothless inbred hicks.

  8. Freddy Rumsen is an underrated character. And Roger Sterling waking up naked amongst a bunch of Bohemian idiots was amusing.

Lots of backdrop in this episode. Betting the subsequent show will have more punch.

  9. Freddy Rumsen was great in One Crazy Summer.

  10. The 30 for 30 Hillsborough that's on tonight is gut wrenching.

  11. I wondered whether to watch. Haven't yet. There's not much redemptive about the whole incident.

  12. can't bring myself to watch that, especially after reading a preview that suggested there was graphic security camera footage. just an unimaginable scene.

  13. Wow. Watch Hillsborough if you get the chance. Unreal.

  14. I understand both of your feelings but I encourage you to watch it. The resilience displayed by the families and a few investigators is redemptive.

  15. I too passed b/c I was uncomfortable w/ the sadness, but everything I hear says it's fantastic.

  16. Here's a happier 25th anniversary, especially for Zman: http://www.theawl.com/2014/04/the-miata-is-25

  17. semi-related: here are the liverpool faithful singing 'you'll never walk alone' on saturday before the reds' match with man city - lots of nods to the 96 in the crowd.

  18. I'll say it again, Hillsborough is worth watching. It gave me goosebumps late in the doc. I'm not driven to goosebumps often.

  19. While I'm going against popular TV opinions amongst the GTB staff I'll come out and say I liked the first episode of this season's Mad Men.

  20. Me too. And my Miata was a great car. Anyone who hasn't owned a lightweight two-seat rear-wheel-drive convertible is missing a piece of their soul that only such a car can fill.

  21. Only TR had distaste for the Mad Men season premiere. I want to see some Betty, other than that I was good with it. Draper's plane ride acknowledgment was something.

  22. I'm sure someone here can explain the symbolism of his patio doors not closing.
Was fine w/the episode - it set some things up for us, including imo don's and/or his wife's death, and most likely the latter, and possibly on HIS hands.

  23. Don Draper the murderer? It's not like he's Mr. Bates.

  24. I'm thinking the involuntary manslaughtererer

  25. I don't see Don spending the rest of his life behind bars. He's more likely to fall or jump from the balcony (given the opening credits) than to throw Megan off it.

He was happy with Megan initially in their fancy apartment but now it's cold and lonely. The doors are broken and he can't keep the cold from seeping in from the outside world. So he goes outside and wallows in it--the literal and figurative cold.

I told you I deserve an English minor.

  26. No, not thinking that either. She or they are going to die in a fire caused by a fag or spliff tossed below their California digs.

  27. The College of William & Mary doesn't offer a minor in English, Z. They cut that offering while I was enrolled. That's what they told me and my 36 credits of mediocre grades in English.

  28. Roger Sterling's daughter is the worst.

  30. The oral history Grantland has on 8-mile is fairly entertaining, especially the part about the advice imparted by Dre to the screenwriter after he pitched the movie to Dre.

I remember really liking the first bite or two of the Double Down. Then my hands were too burnt to enjoy it.

  33. Gareth Bale's (probable) Cope del Rey winning goal was a masterpiece.

  34. And Neymar just blew a wide open shot at an equalizer.

  35. I posted an angry screed about the lack of an English minor at W&M.

  36. where? that's ratings gold.

  37. The doors won't close b/c Don can't close out the modern world that is making a dinosaur out of him. So in the end (of the episode), Don is forced to wallow outside, in the acknowledgment that time (as well as his firm and his burgeoning TV star wife) are passing him by.

The imagery was heavy-handed. His wife not letting him drive or wanting to bang him are two examples. Neve Campbell saying her husband "died of thirst" is another example. Same with Pete telling Don that his rap wouldn't work on his realtor girlfriend.

Draper's wife's plot-line is too parallel to Sharon Tate for my tastes.

  38. Is Don going to sleep with a 13-year-old and flee the country?

  40. Yikes - Wiz grabbed the 5 seed; will play Bulls? I did not even realize going in to last night that that was a possible outcome even if they won. That is the opposite of reward for their current win streak.
