Fab Filler

If you have been watching any part of these Olympics, than you have by now likely seen my vote for "Breakout Star" of the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. In fact, he was mentioned in this space just a few days ago. That's right, folks, Johnny Weir  has stolen the show at Sochi. and I am not the only one who feels this way:

"The Pee Wee Herman meets Sonny Crocket look, with just a hint of Bennett chainmail."

But no, seriously folks, I want Weir and co-booth buddy Tara Lipinski to star in a Lifetime remake of "Bonnie & Clyde". [Terry Gannon can go away and forever relish his '83 national title]

  3. Johnny Weir is rocking a black crocodile trench and a necklace borrowed from Queen Elizabeth. He's so hiphop.

  4. not to rub it in marls, but last night was fantastic. got the call early about the snow day, but the gym was still open for adult basketball. played for an hour, and then went to the pub . . . on a wednesday! the regulars kept telling us we had the wrong day.

the way this is going, we're going to have another snow day tomorrow, and pete insists the pub will be open tonight, so things are looking good.

and yes i have been sledding with the kids and played with the dog in the snow. i won't complain until my nonexistent spring break . . .

  7. Glad you're enjoying the book, Dave. I bought it thinking it would be decent and ended up reading it in less than a week. But I'm a huge basketball dork.

  9. How did biathlon become a thing? Watching people shoot spidery guns while perched on a pile of snow is not interesting TV.

    Snow day!

  10. 5 min ago I finished an article on the sport. In a golf magazine. "The sport, which originated as a training exercise for the Norwegian army...." The article was written by a dame that used to play a bit of golf and integrated biathlon in her training regiment, which is why I've never heard of her.
I myself would love to try it. Now you know.

  11. NJ is the crookedest:

    http://www.newrepublic.com/article/116601/chris-christies-rise-and-fall

"[Sharpe] James’s successor, Cory Booker, is the first mayor of Newark not to be indicted since 1962."

  12. I think Booker is clean but there is still time Zman.

As for snow day Dave...I admit that I am jealous. That said, the office cleared out early tonight so an early slide down the dinosaur's tail may be in order.

  13. is that a euphemism for something dirty? or a flintstone's reference.

  14. espn's doing a documentary on steve nash, focused on his efforts to get back to full strength and his struggles with his athletic mortality. first episode here, with a piece by bill simmons about how it came to be:

anyone who loves hoops, or who's on the wrong side of 40 (or on the way there) will appreciate it immensely.

  15. I read the article earlier today. Pretty envious that Simmons has that kind of friendship with Nash. Looking forward to watching the video tonight.

  16. On the topic of Nash, if you've never read Seven Seconds or Less I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy. Legendary SI basketball writer Jack McCallum was given full access to the Suns for an entire season. One of the best basketball books I've ever read. And I've read a ton.

  20. Speaking of hoops documentaries, this Lenny Cooke movie is riveting. He went to high school with zsister so I find it especially interesting. It's like watching a car crash in slow mo.

  21. I really want to see that. I remember when Cooke was the next big star. I was riveted just watching the trailer for it. A sad cautionary tale.

Joakim Noah produced the Cooke doc.

  22. The ending is a gut punch. Yikes.
