Sad News

Before there was Gheorghe, there was Manute.

Sadly, Manute Bol lost his battle today with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a skin condition he contracted while in his native Sudan working to build a local school. He was 47 years old.

Though it was easy to characterize Bol as a gimmick, the 397 shots he blocked as a rookie in 1985 remains the second-highest single-season mark in league history. His post-NBA life was marked by his quiet dedication to helping others in his home continent and his string of bad luck with illness and injuries. Among his many friends in and out of the league, Charles Barkley once said of Bol, "You know, a lot of people feel sorry for him, because he's so tall and awkward. But I'll tell you this -- if everyone in the world was a Manute Bol, it's a world I'd want to live in."

R.I.P., Manute. May you spend eternity jacking and making awkward three-pointers.

  1. Glad that post didn't end four words short.

  2. Brother of the Teej has reminded me (again) that he lived across the hall from Dustin Johnson at Coastal Carolina, and partied and golfed a few rounds with him. Of course Brother of the Teej only lasted a year at Coastal, or else we might have a few better stories.

  4. Robs last line of the post brought a wide smile to my face. Manute's 6 three pointer game is one of my all time favorite goofy NBA memories.

  5. Freddy Garcia might have a coronary pitching in the heat and humidity at Nats Park today.

  14. Hey Shlara, you looked mighty miserable at 7:25 this morning trying to merge on to 395...and if you had inched out any further that black Saturn Vue you would've hit was me.

    Happy Monday All!

  15. For those of you without the morning flexibility to view the World Cup, this Portugal-PRK game has been entertaining. PRK's defense completely fell apart around minute 50 (3 goals in about 10-12 minutes) and Portugal has looked more like the recent Phoenix Suns teams this half.

  17. Federer (51-5 at Wimbledon) lost the first two sets to Alejandro Falla (3-5 at Wimbledon)?! This would be a hyoodge upset. I can't remember the last time the 1 seed lost in the first round at Wimbledon.

  18. And ESPN.com's live score tracker says "ESPN: 2010 French Open." They might want to update it.

  19. Our chum Marston, who's taller than the rest of us, still gets called "Manute" by a few of us. Do you think that somewhere out there is a group of idiots like ourselves, and the guy who's got the most lank & gangle gets called "Gheorghe" by the rest of them?
