I got so excited about the release of my dog's book that I forgot the traditional G:TB celebration of the release of a new Old 97s record. American Primitive is the 13th studio album by our guys, who are marking their 30th year together as a band. That in itself is noteworthy.
Reviews have been nearly uniformly positive, lauding the band's consistency and hailing the record as "consistently exciting and rambunctious" while claiming its 13 tracks "cut a vigorous slice through some rowdy melodies & upbeat jaunty ones". Music, one might say, to my ears.
In a splendid bit of timing, I've now sold enough books to have generated sufficient royalties to purchase a vinyl version of the record. Gonna splash some of that writer cash.

ReplyDeletePour one out for Allman Bros band co-founder Dickey Betts (80). If you have time, cue up "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." You could do worse than the version on Live At Fillmore East.
ReplyDeleteI am privileged to have seen the ABB with Dickey Betts a few times in the 90’s before they tossed him out 25 years ago. Pity that they/he couldn’t make it work longer. They made beautiful music together.

I also saw ABB with Dickey many times in the 90s.
ReplyDeleteLast night I saw another act with Jacksonville roots- JJ Grey and Mofro. A big band that goes hard. Not really my cup of meat, but I’ll give them an A for effort.
In July 1993, a young Teej attended the second annual H.O.R.D.E Festival at SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center). Dickey played with the boys that night... and then got himself arrested later that eveing after shoving a cop who showed up because ol' Dickey was hitting his woman.

ReplyDeleteI believe it was around then that I went to HORDE tour stop in Richmond. I don't remember seeing the Allmans in Richmond though. I always went to Raleigh.
