Interlude, Lagniappe, Choose Your Own Description

I came across this the other day and shared it with a couple of you, but it's too good not to spread further. Trombone Shorty posted this video on his Twitter account this week. It's from the Mumford and Sons set that closed JazzFest on May 7. This song is the penultimate performance of the week (Mumfords followed it up with a rollicking version of 'I Will Wait'), and features Shorty, Jon Batiste, and Celisse. It's spectacular. Make sure you wait until the very end when Marcus Mumford, Shorty, and Batiste smile because they knew what they'd just done.

  1. A buddy just texted me to see I want to go to Trombone Shorty in Roanoke on the 13th.

Poor timing on my part, as I'll be in the land of TR after my cousin's wedding. Someone please send me TR's digits, and I'll try and check in on him whilst I'm there.

  2. Rootsy’s 2023 wedding circuit is all poorly timed. Alas.

I don’t know that I’m paying a Hampton Jazz Festival charge of $75++ just to see a short Shorty set, but it’s a definite maybe.

  3. Yes, it is. The sound is brilliant. The action is glorious. Worth watching more than once.

  4. I’ve easily watched that video ten times in the past three days. so much talent, and so much mutual respect and joy. game recognize game.

  5. That’s one of the most spiritual things I’ve ever seen. House of the Rising Sun is one of my top ten songs of all time. That was epic. The word “epic” is overused. Not for that though.

  6. Also, the first time I ever heard House of the Rising Sun was on a drive through the Arizona desert as a young teenager. Made an impact.

  7. I just watched the clip. I'm not a big mumfid guy, but it was powerful nonetheless. I don't understand why acoustic guitars are permitted to sound so terrible in a live setting. I'm sure it's a nice Martin he's playing, but you can't hear that. Those New Orleans cats bringing that home was great, and it looked that Marcus felt they got him to new heights.

  11. There was a video for that? I’d say we profaned that anthem pretty good. Should be a video! Let’s shoot one this year.

  12. my local high school girls track and field team is in first by 10 points with only the 4x400 left at the state meet. they need 1 point (8th place) or better to clinch the title. the meet is in a lightning delay. very tense!

  13. we have drama! the team that was in second won the 4x400 in a very fast heat by three tenths of a second. our school finished outside the points. heritage (newport news) and tuscarora share the state title!

  15. On a flight to Columbus, OH. First time back in Ohio since my summer internship in Cleveland 20 years ago. Said I’d never go back. Work demands it though. Gonna walk around the Ohio state campus tomorrow in a Gator shirt and dare someone to say some shit to me.

  16. Been pondering a way to consider Jokic, fully aware that I'm criminally late to watching him at length. Came up with this tortured analogy: Jokic is an elevated, gourmet burger. At first glance, you think, "why am I paying $24 for a burger?" Then you take a few bites and think, "Holy moley, there's a lot more to this than just a burger. I'd pay $30 and eat it once a week."

To extend the analogy, Giannis and Embiid and LeBron are seared scallops or duck breast or filet mignon with interesting sauces and seasoning and sides. You think, "Yep, that's what a $40 entree looks and tastes like. But don't sleep on the burger, cuz for what it is, it's every bit as good as the expensive meals."

The hoopheads and sportsters among you tell me if that's a reach or remotely valid.
