A Differential Gheorghemas Interlude

Did you ever wonder how your car's differential works?  Do you know what the differential is?  It's that round thing behind your truck nuts.

Luckily, in 1937 a guy named Jam Handy made a movie explaining it in an accessible way.  Parenthetically, Jam Handy sounds like a good guy to have around if you need to throw a particularly large or belligerent person in the bowl.

You can fast forward to 1:55 if you don't want to watch the introductory nonsense.  Postcount!

  1. I'm a big fan of Jam Handy's work. All kinds of action referenced in this film.

  2. ok, that's cool.

also, the introductory nonsense is fun.

and finally, aren't those car nuts?

  3. y'all will be pleased to know that i'm through the review of the first quarter of 2020 gtb posts. it's grueling. gonna need more booze. but there was some high-quality dipshittery posted around here.

  4. gonzaga is absolutely dismantling virginia. i've never seen a tony bennett defense disemboweled like this. gonzaga is realllly good.

  5. nate knight gets some early run for the hawks, 3-3 from the field, 2 boards, 8 points. sweet.

  6. Gonzaga is loaded and they play and extremely aesthetically pleasing form of offense.

Knight might end up being a perfect for with Trae due to his pick and pop ability.

Was too busy to post about dinner last night. My wife and father in law made lobster and clams. I smoked a prime rib. I also had smoked some Cobia earlier this week for a fish dip appetizer. And my mother in law did a huge plate of anti pasta.

It was a hell of a spread.

  7. right on cue, knight just finished an alley-oop from trae through contact and converted the free throw. 11 points now.

  8. My whole family is about to get divorced from each other. Sleep patterns are off, crap food is plentiful, responsibilities are minimal and electronics options are abundant. Wife is upset nobody wants to play Uno. Uno! Everybody is upset. The NFL games suck.

Hello scotch, my old friend. I’ve come to talk with you again.

  9. I’ll play Uno with Tiara if you send her over here to fix my furnace. It’s cold outside.

  10. It’s relatively cold here too. But it’s a fun cold that allows me to wear sweats, socks and slides and a hoodie around the house.

  11. If zman and tiara do a version of everyone’s favorite kinda rapey holiday song ‘baby it’s cold outside’ while she works on the furnace, I’d like the link. Will pay $$$.

Hope you get it working z. I’ve definitely done some questionable shit to resuscitate mine when it’s gone down at inopportune times. My repair guy was impressed that I’d figured a way to manually ignite it.

  12. I’m listening to the ‘Wildflowers’ home demos. They are beautiful.

  13. hawks coach lloyd pierce opened his post-game presser tonight thusly:

"I'm only here to talk about Nathan Knight. If you don't have a question about Nathan Knight, I don't have time for you."

    righteous.

  14. ‘Uhhh coach, can you talk about the storied institution of higher learning that help mold Nathan Knight, some successful NFL coaches, and multiple contributors to an obscure web blog that celebrates dipshittery?’

  15. Seems like somebody needs to get a Hawks media credential so they can ask the kind of questions Rootsy is suggesting.

Just my two cents as an alumnus of another prestigious public institution with a renowned School of Journalism.

  16. I guess there was some innuendo there. But it's really cold and the condensate pump for my furnace broke earlier today. The HVAC guys took forever to get here so zwoman got exasperated (and cold) and fled with zkids to her mother's apartment. The HVAC guys gouged the hell out me (no one wants to work on Saturday, let alone the day after Christmas) but zhome is warm again. I do not want to do anything inappropriate with or to Tiara.

  17. In other news, I can't say enough bad things about modern sweatpants. Who wants skinny fit sweats? I got a pair for Christmas and I feel like I'm wearing a woman's sweatpants (but not Tiara's).

  19. The sweatpants/jogger divide is a real thing. I like joggers for being out and about (Polo joggers are especially comfortable) but I need actual sweatpants at home. With that in mind, I received a pair of Nike Hawkins Physical Education sweatpants (Stranger Things) for Xmas. They are delightful.

Unrelated, other than a game involving Florida there’s not a bowl game I can think of where my rooting interest is more clear than Coastal Carolina-Liberty

  20. Coastal Carolina for the win, Mark?

  21. I swear by Vuori athleisure gear. Great shorts, shirts, zip-up hoodies and sweats.

I live in a pair of their Transit Jogger sweats these days. It has zippers on the front and back pockets. It’s a classy look, as far as sweats go.

  22. i am a big vuori fan, and i got a pair of mack weldon ace sweats a few months ago. they're perfect. and a bit skinny.

  23. I’ve been in sweats and slides for the past three days. Doesn’t happen often in Florida. It’s been pretty great.

  25. Coastal Carolina-Liberty is keeping me up later than I’d like but I’m not mad.

  26. My 13 y/o is a HUGE Dolphins fan. He was wearing his new Tua jersey tonight. That ending was bonkers. Everyone in our family has met Fitzpatrick, who lived in our town for two years. So the whole fam (except me) was rooting for the Fins. And that play - the Fitzmagic Miracle - was preposterous. His head got yanked backwards and he still got the pass on target to a guy 30 yds down the field who was on the sideline. Preposterous ending. But Dolphins fans should be concerned about Tua. There’s a reason the coaches don’t trust him to throw down the field. Either he can’t read coverage or he can’t pick up blitzes.

  27. Tua was exposed two years ago in the National Championship game, imo. He loves the downfield throw and he’s good at it. Not great at reading the midfield and fitting into tight windows. I’m happy to be wrong because he seems to be a great dude but that’s what my untrained eye sees.

I can’t stand the Dolphins. Residue from the 80s when Miami was good (and loved) and the Bucs were trash.

Hell of a finish by Fitz. He’s flawed as hell but he’s easy to root for.

  28. Turns out fat James Harden is still really good.

  30. front-page article in the nyt today about a girl who used to dance with my daughter. she was admitted to tennessee and was slated to cheer for the vols. a video of her as a 15 year-old saying the n-word surfaced and tennessee cheer kicked her off the team (the school didn't revoke her admission, but she chose not to go there). we know the kid and family well. mom is a very nice person. kid is an asshole, according to my kid.

the nyt story frames the incident in the context of broader racial problems in loco schools. now, fuckheads online are harassing the young black kid who went public with the video in question. it's a predictably fucked up situation.

i am very torn. the girl was 15 and used the n-word as a throwaway, as in "i got my permit, i can drive, n-word". never appropriate to use the word, full stop. but does the punishment fit the crime? i think the example being set could be helpful in getting other kids to be more thoughtful. i also think tennessee and the loco public schools could've used this as a learning and growth opportunity.

  34. How is Dwayne Haskins still under center for Washington?

At half: 6-15, 36 yds, 2 (very bad) INT, 1 fumble lost, 1 maskless strip joint visit in the papers this week

Backup is Taylor Heinicke, star at ODU. Would love to see him get the nod. Haskins is so done.

  37. I did not realize until a minute ago just how close that Nashville explosion was to the heart of downtown. It was one block from Broadway, the bar-crawling tourist hub of the city. I was lucky enough to finally get there for a night in the fall of 2019. My hotel was one block south of Broadway, about two blocks from the blast.

Nice to see those touching words from our President about the blast...
