The Old 49er

At some point this morning, probably not early, our man Whitney's gonna wake up and crank this tune:

All the best to our favorite Southsider. Hope you close out your 40s in style.

(We've hidden a sublime joke opportunity in this post. Let's see if our birthday boy notices.)

  1. Was TR not invited to the block party or was he protesting?

  3. last thing i remember from my evening is a friend saying, 'i haven't seen rob this drunk since new orleans'. so i'm feeling sprightly today.

  4. mr kq prognosticated correctly. ireland thrashed scotland, 27-3. england hammered tonga, and italy whipped namibia.

  5. Thanks. I’m feeling my age today for sure. May have to open a 40 to celebrate.

  6. The Jets are fucking astronomically atrocious.

  7. Jets-Dolphins games this year should be blacked out to all TV markets.

Anybody catch the final score of UCLA-Wazzu?

67-63. They combined for over 1000 passing yards and 14 passing TDs.

  8. I really wish I cared less about the Bucs.

  10. Happy Birthday Whit!

I am sunburnt. Got scorched at my oldest guy’s football game and my youngest guy’s soccer game. Good guys won both games: 16-6 and 7-0, respectively. I don’t want to complain about the extended summer, but 88 degrees is hot as fuck. But the forecast into October here in the NYC area is perfect.

  11. Happy belated Whit. I was busting balls all weekend to get our rental house ready for the tenants who moved in yesterday, and to get my work done before three days way off the grid in WV this week. Going with youngest son on school trip to bike the Greenbrier River Trail, a rail bed converted to trail along a beautiful river, where I'm the designated long-distance biker. No idea how motivated the kids are this year, but three years ago I ended up doing 76.9 miles with a group of 13 year olds. I doubt that much effort will be required this year, but we'll see.

  13. Sturgill Simpson just announced he's playing some small venues in a couple of weeks. Get some.

  14. our man on the outer banks informed me today that joe brady, the passing coordinator who's being lauded as the architect of lsu's joe burrow's flying start to the season, is a w&m grad. viva le tribe.

  15. W&M men’s soccer remains winless. The team lost to a mediocre Drexel team last night. Drexel’s resume includes a loss to Binghamton and a tie to NJIT, a small engineering college in Hoboken.

We are 0-4-2 and can’t fire Norris soon enough.

  16. happy birthday whit. i will complain about the extended summer, despite a great beach day on saturday. we are trying to have a soccer season and it's 91 fucking degrees. i am done with it. it's time for the mosquitoes to die.

  17. happy belated my friend. flipping channels between mnf and country music, thinking of you fondly, whit. i am typically anal about viewing ahead but am on the road. at home i'd be in the middle of part 2, whichever years it covers. tonight's takes us to '68-'72. mind blown, well, maybe a bit of hyperbole, but did not know that shel silverstein wrote "a boy named sue". who else knew this, besides whit?

  18. And Kris(toffer) Kristofferson - Knew nothing of him. Deserving of a doc himself.

  19. I am in KC for work. Ate bacon-wrapped rabbit for dinner. Was excited for MMF and then saw the teams playing. Jay Gruden makes Trubisky look competent.

  23. Agree, Danny Boy, last night's Country Music was a dandy. From Johnny Cash's influence on Bob Dylan to the great Hee Haw. And George Jones.

Sunday Morning Coming Down is my go-to karaoke tune and an all-time hangover song.

And Kris Kristofferson, rugby player! I knew a bit about him, but not that.
