Remember When Life Was Simpler and We Could Live Dangerously?

Back last September, Zman and I found ourselves on the same flight from Newark to Tokyo. It was unusual. And it allowed me to take one weird stalkerish pic.

As he may (or may not) remember, the flight's wifi crapped out on us. This is a suboptimal turn of events on a 13-hour flight. So I had to hunker down and dig into my meager Netflix downloads. But I did not like Bloodline, even though I've had a crush on Linda Cardellini since her Freaks & Geeks days. So I started perusing the movie selections on the flight.

You take a different mindset when you are alone on a flight with no responsibilities for the next ten hours. You're essentially looking for mindless entertainment. The screen is small and the audio is poor, so you don't want to have to think too hard. On recent flights, I dug into Deadpool and the newest X-Men movie. They were both fine. But I couldn't find one to tide me over...until I found Johnny Dangerously.

In the early days of HBO, they seemed to have ten movies on replay over and over again. I saw The Outsiders and Red Dawn about a million times. And Johnny Dangerously was in that mix as well. It's important to remember how iconic that move is. It ages fantastically.

Here are my seven favorite things about that move, which, at 34 years old, is older than my future second ex-wife.

1. Michael Keaton - god damn, he had his comedy fastball working in this. He was great. It's nice to have him back around these days.

2. This was Dick Butkus' second greatest acting effort after his role in Hamburger U.

3. Raymond's dad played a mafia boss and it made sense at the time. Rest in peace, Peter Boyle

4. Weird Al did the opening credits song. This was before his meteoric rise to fame from Eat It, although I will fistfight with any man, woman or child who denies that Rye or the Kaiser is his best tune.

5. Your Testicles and You. Still epic.

6. There are some tremendous cameos in this movie: Mr. Hand, Taylor Negron, Dom DeLuise and Chuck Woolery, to name a few. That's a random group of 80's name that have zero resonance with the millennials.

7. Roman Moronie. Holy crap is he the best. The actor who played him (Richard Dimitri) did very little of note before or after this movie. But he hit it out of the park with this role.

  1. I always had a soft spot for Buy Me A Condo. I saw Johnny Dangerously in the theater and never saw it again because my mom was too cheap to get cable. Maybe I'll rent it for the kids.

  2. It's a shame you didn't get a photo of the guy sitting next to me. Waaaaaay too outgoing for a 12 hour flight.

  3. I also saw Johnny Dangerously a million times. So good. I’d add Piscopo at his peak. (Blink and you missed it.) My mother hung me in a hook once.

I like Eat It and Smells Like Nirvana, and I love Another One Rides the Bus. Strange guilty pleasure from All About the Pentiums.

  4. Another One Rides the Bus is really underrated.

Also, I posted a comment in the other thread a minute before TR posted this so I’m posting it’s again...

There are currently many things that bum me out in our world but the clip of Joey Bada$$ dancing (quite well) to “The Less I Know the Better” is most definitely not one of them.

  5. tribe shit the bed at home against drexel. not excellent.

  6. My wife has bought me a number of great gifts over the years but the Big Green Egg is the best. And I don’t think it’s close.

  7. Keaton is one of the few today that makes me want to see a movie. He is in my top 5.

In Gainesville this wkd for a swim meet... Mark, check out Beque Holic, Korean bbq restaurant next time in town. Gtb is owed a post or 3 of my 69days in Korea, circa 2000. I ate the fare 4-5 nights per week. Haven’t had anything close since until tonight, in fucking Gainesville.

Kid had a nice day...will limit the boasting to last event of day, 200 yd freestyle relay....D swam anchor and was about 3 body lengths behind. Caught and beat for the dubwa with fans adoring. The kid gets more medals in a day than I did in a lifetime and I love it.

  8. What Mark said. This Xmas in fact. Can’t get enough of bge.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Which bge is the one to get?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Large is the right size. A couple of buddies have the xl and though they like it, they’d prefer the Lg.

    ReplyDelete
  11. tr caught a lot of himself in that shot of zman. humblebrag about his sexiness?

  12. randy moss making the hall of fame makes me happy

  13. marls and i have figured out a caa tournament plan. since the event format is saturday/sunday/tuesday, and since nobody can take a flier on four days hoping the tribe gets that far, our plan is to wait to see if they make the final. if they do, road trip leaving dc on monday morning, heading back on wednesday after the tribe win the autobid. it's an 8-hour drive from dc, a 6 1/2-hour drive from norfolk, a 6-hour drive from merritt island/indianola, and a 4 hour drive from jacksonville. mark can pick up danimal on the way.

    march 3-6. mark your calendars.

  14. Isaac Bruce should be in. I could write a post about it but I'm lazy.

Thanks for the egg info, I want to step up my grilling game.

    This Pinhook Rye though!

  15. I also have the large bge.

I don’t know where Indianola is but I’m sure it’s lovely. And if Rob ever associates me with Merritt’s island again, I will fucking cut him.

  16. I’m also super happy for Randy Moss. I saw Moss play pickup during his redshirt freshman season at FSU. I was up visiting my sister and snuck in to the FSU Rec center to play ball.

As I was getting ready to leave, a bunch of football players showed up on another court. I knew who Moss was because of his recruitment (and the stories from my brother in law about his exploits in practice that year). So I stuck around and watched a couple games. He was unreal. Dunking, nailing jumpers. Even amongst the other players it was clear he was on another level.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The best investment I ever made was season Patriots tickets for the 2006-07 season. Moss was superhuman. He was bigger and faster than everyone else. You didn't need to see a jersey number to know who was Moss.

Although my 2008 Celtics seaons (at $8.50 per game) paid off too.

  18. And "I will fucking cut him" is a special comment. Cutting threats are my favorite kind of animus.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Finally, Mark, we can argue Supreme Clientele vs Cuban Linx vs Fishscale vs Liquid Swords. A 36 Chambers but does anyone really win?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I will cut you/him is a personal favorite. My wife and I once had a spirited debate on what was worse, being shot or stabbed.

That is an unwinnable debate, Z. But one I’m happy to have the next time we convene for drinks.

  21. terrible error on my part, mark. i just cut myself in atonement. but i could have sworn i sent a bottle of whisky to an indianola address. where did i send it?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tom Petty, Rolling Stone interview in 1977 when his sound was compared to new wave and punk rock: "Call me a punk and I'll cut you."

    ReplyDelete
  23. Indialantic, Rob. So you were close.

    ReplyDelete
  24. dammit. i was off by six letters and 30 miles. still a 6-hour drive. and you can still pick up danimal on the way.

    ReplyDelete
  25. When did the tournament final move to Tuesday? That's annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Probably happened when ESPN told them to do it, if they wanted it to be aired.

    ReplyDelete
  27. right around that time, exactly.

rooting interests this evening? i don't want philly to have nice things, so i'd prefer a new england win.

    ReplyDelete
  28. in reviewing the schedule, marls and i (mostly marls) actually have it wrong. there's no gap day. the tournament goes from saturday (play-in round) to tuesday (finals) with no day off. the plan still holds, but it'll now be a drive down on tuesday and a drive home on wednesday. unless we want an extra day in charleston, in which case we can still drive down on monday if the tribe makes the semis. i'm down with that.

  29. zfamily is united behind the Pats although there's greater interest in the puppy bowl among our distaff representatives.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don’t really care but I love The Roots and want them to be happy so I guess I’ll pull for the Eagles. What I’m really rooting for is all of my prop bets.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I heard they are having some puppies with disabilities participating in the puppy bowl, and they will be trying to find good homes for them. Kind of cool.

  32. Keeping with the theme of this post, the Fargen family in Chesapeake VA adopted Bear the pitbull/Spaniel mix.

  33. Fargen ice holes.

No love for the high water mark for Marilu Henner?

  34. Dirty still gettin paper. RIP ODB.

  35. I will be flying to Charleston for the tourney--can't handle a long car ride
And, I want the Patriots to lose more than I want the Eagles to lose

  36. You lads and lasses will love this call from a great match yesterday:

  37. I believe Eagles fans deserve no happiness. I'd like it if the Pats won but somehow Gronk's SB ring got lost in the mail.

And chiming in late, I would have hoped for more love for King of Suede and Yoda from Weird Al's collection.

    ReplyDelete
  38. belichick going for it on 4th and 5 at the 35 when he didn't on 4th and 1 in the red zone is...odd

  39. Former Gator QB Trey Burton!

    ReplyDelete
  40. The guy responsible for the sound feed for the halftime show forgot to do whatever it is he needed to do to make it sound good.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I like JT but he was winded after the second number and has struggled to get it back. He could have used a surprise musical guest (and not just a Prince hologram) to give him a breather.

TJ - I'll see you in the ticket line for SKYSCRAPER

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm not sure it's possible to mix sound well for live tv.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i agree. i'm a big jt fan. but that was whelming.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I took a flyer on Gronk +800 for MVP. Liking my chances right now.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Quite whelming by Justin. His shoes were the best part of the show. I Stan for Cry Me A River and he even managed to screw that up.

I’ll go see SKYSCRAPER with you and TJ in spirit, Mayhugh. And I’ll make Teej live tweet it with me.

  46. ARe there two more old time football player names than Herb Adderely and Fuzzy Thurston?

    ReplyDelete
  47. This is getting reversed right?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Nobody knows what a catch is. This seems problematic.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The Stinger is a cool car but I wouldn't position it as a car old guys drive to feel young again, not at that price point. It's a car for young guys who want an alternative to an S4 and don't view the non-European brand as a bad thing.

None of you care, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Eagles have no chance now right?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would not be surprised to see some sphincters tightening on this next Eagles drive. Hope not, too good of a game.

    ReplyDelete
  52. 5 point deficit with 2:20, a TO and 2 minute warning to come - anybody actually think the Pats aren't pulling this out?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Eagles both players and coaches showed some real balls. They earned the fuck out of this.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah...that was all coaching. The 4th and a couple in the 4th...Michaels and Collinsworth gave no weight to that. If Philly doesn’t convert, it is over.
Why is Darrell Green giving the trophy?

    ReplyDelete
  55. At least Eli isn't as special as he used to be. And Trump is pissed.
