Popcorn Lagniappe

In the words of the immortal(ish) Chad Allan, I've got, got, got, got no time to cobble together anything thoughtful for you this morning, but I do find myself eagerly awaiting a number of shoes to drop, events to happen, and futures to arrive.

Grabbing my popcorn, and watching:

Pat Forde's reporting on the NCAA hoops corruption 'scandal' continues to implicate the biggest names in the game. The logical conclusion here: blow it all up and let the market actually operate. The illogical conclusion, dozens of teams are banned from NCAA Tournament play, meaning the Tribe finally goes dancing.

Germany leads Canada, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Olympic hockey tournament, one day after the U.S. beat our northern neighbors in women's hockey and men's curling. Global warming is a motherfucker.

Manchester City and Arsenal play this weekend in the final of the Carabao Cup, the first cup competition in English soccer. I have no idea what a Carabao is.

Our Tribe play league-leading Charleston on Saturday in the regular season finale. We'll lose. It doesn't matter. David Cohn will play his final game in Williamsburg, closing his career as the Tribe's all-time leading scorer. And Connor Burchfield, the nation's leading three-point shooter, finishes his time in a Tribe uniform. Those do matter.

And speaking of popcorn, I'm going to see Black Panther this weekend. No spoilers.

  1. I don't think Chad Allan was part of the No Time era of The Guess Who. I believe that's Burton Cummings, maybe Randy Bachman instead.

Surprised you didn't go with The Police, No Time This Time. Also a great one.

  2. You’re either precise or imprecise. Nobody likes an imp.

  3. What if the heart of the NCAA scandal is Miller and Adidas working together to push kids to Adidas schools, and then to have Miller sign them when they go pro? Can it be spun that way? NCAA won’t let the news blow up the tourney. They are shameless and qualmless.

  5. Recently discovered "Covers" station on Sirius/XM, my new fave.
In back-to-back-to-back today we had Billie Jean by Chris Cornell, Led Zeppelin's Thank You by Dooran Dooran, and Lady Antebellum's Need You Now by Adele & Darius Rucker.

  6. The NCAA should go full “heel”’wrestling style. Why do they even bother. Get in bed with the power 5 conferences and full on declare that they are a paid league for football and basketball with five divisions. Would anybody give a shit?

  7. sean miller on tape talking about $100k payment to deandre ayton. burn it alllllll down. which, in the long run, will be better.

  8. I doubt much will change. The actors will but there’s too much shoe/agent money to stop kids from getting paid. Even if they get paid twice.

  9. I don’t say that to minimize a big time coach like Miller being caught on tape in this fahsion. It’s pretty fucking huge.

  10. i agree with your conclusion. not that much will change. but if this is the thing that makes them just let everyone get paid, then i'm good with it.

  11. But Miller is gone by Monday, right?.

  12. Miller’s agent = MVP. Was able to negotiate, inexplicably imo, the retention of 80% of all monies owed on agreement should he get shitcanned for cause. How much does he have left on his deal you ask? 12M. For you math challenged, Seany is going to pocket $10m for being caught cheating.

  13. You think the Zona muckety mucks Care that he was cheating? They don’t. They only care that he was caught.

  14. Pay. The. Players.

    And, watch this doc:

  15. Also, the NCAA is basically the evil empire.
Their legal defense for not paying players is based on a case upholding unpaid prison labor.
    Prison
    WTF

And, while you're on the documentary tour, watch this one too:

  17. New dog is on its way from Jacksonville. I’m beyond excited.

  18. miller gets more money if he's fired for cause than if he's fired without cause. that's some amazingly incompetent lawyering by the school.

  19. tigger playing some golf today. could put himself in contention tomorrow if he keeps it up but i am betting he sputters in the last 3 holes and shoots 2-3 over tomorrow.

  20. We just mailed a deposit for our first family puppy. Will come after Labor Day. Can’t wait for puppy diarrhea on my carpet.

  21. Puppies are a tremendous pain in the ass but they are worth it for the joy they bring to your house. The last few months were my first without a dog in 17 years. I needed a new one. I’m a dog person and despite all the bullshit they force you to put up with they’re worth it to me.

  22. my dog just might be rallying-- just took a long walk with him-- but he's a shadow of his former self. it's so sad . . . i already want a new young athletic dog to replace this guy, we might have to have a two dog overlap while this guy winds down into senescence.

  23. I went through the same thing with my elder pit bull. He lived until almost 16 but the last few years were a real struggle. It was sad to see a dog that used to climb trees struggle to even run for a period of time. It’s really sad to see them like that.

  24. I haven't had a dog since 1980, when our fox terrier Squirt died. (She, by the way, lent me her name for the "childhood pet name/childhood street name becomes porn star name" game, as I was Squirt Buckingham.)

I do like dogs, but I just don't think I have the enthusiasm and dedication necessary to be a great dog owner, so I leave that responsibility to dog lovers.

  25. black panther lives up to the hype

  26. New dog joining the Marls household as well. Rescue lab/hound mix.

  27. Squirt Buckingham sounds like a guy who could toe to toe w/ Peter North giving a money shot.

  28. I saw Black Panther yesterday. I’m not huge on comic book/super hero movies but it’s very good. Like most moves those days you could cut 20-30 minutes.

  29. Devonte is the shit. He really stood out when I saw them play TCU in person.

  30. I’m still so jealous of TR’s trip to Phog Allen. Graham being a guy who was committed to App State until late in his senior year makes me love him even more. Late blooming athletes are my favorites.

  31. tribe won a ridiculous one today to close out the regular season. gave up 63 second-half points to blow a 12-point halftime lead to conference champs charleston, but ran the cougars out in overtime, 114-104. caa quarters against towson a week from tomorrow. that's a bad matchup for the good guys.

  32. Melo, Russ and George are a combined 11 for 45 from the field and 3 for 20 from three. Ain't gonna win a lot of games shooting like that.

In quasi-related news, Nick Collison's career earnings are $60 million.

  33. ben simmons is faster than i knew

    ReplyDelete
  34. Simmons is a freak. He’s close to 7 ft and just incredibly agile. If he ever gets anything resembling a jumpshot it’s over.

I’d really like Markell Fultz to recover mentally because damn the Sixers would be unreal with him, Embiid and Simmons.
