Redemption Song

In 1996, Washington Bullets owner Abe Pollin grew weary of the gun violence that killed, among others, his friend Yitzhak Rabin, and decided that his basketball team needed a new name. Among the five finalists offered to the public for consideration, only the Sea Dogs had any charm. And that charm was mostly due to the fact that the moniker was so...weird. Or at least out of place in a town known more for Blue Dogs than seafaring.

As we well know, Sea Dogs lost out to the singularly uninspiring Wizards. In their 19 seasons since the name change, the Wiz have won a total of four playoff series, playing to an aggregate regular season winning percentage of .424. It's obvious to most observers that the Washington Sea Dogs would've been a far more successful franchise.

Now, two decades late, Pollin's successor Ted Leonsis has finally taken the first steps towards rectifying this egregious error. Next year, Washington will field a G-League franchise for the first time, to play in a new arena in Southeast.

That team will be called the Capital City Go-Go.

I love this all the way down. It's local and unique, paying homage to something indisputably and exclusively Washington. The name evokes energy and stamina and groove, all good things from a hoops perspective.

If you're looking for Gheorghemas presents for your favorite blogger, he wears a medium t-shirt/hoodie. And if Ted Leonsis were to think even bigger, the Capital City Go-Go would make for one hell of a cool NBA team name.

  3. Atrocious defense by Arsenal but equally as brilliant passing and set up by Man U on their second goal.

  5. Will be down to the wire this afternoon for me to know if I’ll have my family room TV up and running. I’m ready to offer my contractor a handy to get it done.

  6. TR, we are four days into a basement remodel, and of course the tv in the basement, so I feel your pain.

  7. TJ - I’m home all day. I have beers If you want to drive into the woods and are okay with the extreme nesting activities of my 38-weeks pregnant wife be my guest.

  8. Mayhugh, I appreciate the offer, but I am actually at the office right now, goatating furiously.

  9. TR, handy or hundy? Both would probably do the trick.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Am guessing the over under in this Ucf Memphis game was not 117

    ReplyDelete
  11. Handy for a hundy in Hong Kong

  12. My TV is up and running! No surround-sound speakers, but I’m back in the game.

I need to wash my hands.

  13. Somehow, UCF-Memphis was more entertaining than UCF-USF. Georgia-Auburn is pretty good so far too. In the exact opposite way.

  14. Over/Under was 83. Easiest bet I made all week. Really missed on my FSU wager.

  15. bigly excitement in the vhsl group 5a state semifinal in leesburg, va. the hometown tuscarora huskies intercepted a pass and ran it back to the visitors' 15 with 17 seconds left in a tie game. they ran a play that almost took the entire game clock because the qb was scrambling. with 2 ticks on the clock, their sophomore placekicker nailed a 33-yarder to send the huskies to the state final.

  16. That’s fun.

I definitely did not see UGA turning the ass whipping around on Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  17. the uga result was also fun

  18. I bet on Auburn and wow was I wrong. That fumble when they were up 7-0 and about to score was pivotal. Kudos to them.
I have Clemson giving 12 in this one.
And Rob, Tuscorara is a Leesburg school?

  19. Wife and I have been kidless since 330. Glorious. Went to early dinner, got a nice wine buzz on, came home and made out and such, she is watching her shows now and me football. True love. Glass of nice scotchety scotch to boot.

  20. Bettors need to bet on Indy tomorrow I believe. FWIW.
    Great, turnover chain is out.

  21. The Miami kicker’s mullet is epic.

  22. Have been commenting on Clemson game about 20 min behind the action. Paused it during make out session. If you know what I mean.

  23. It's awesome that we're at the point where we (or at least Danimal) live-blog sex.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I enjoy Danimal giving himself 20 minutes. Sure, buddy.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I want to see Oklahoma and Clemson in the big game.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I too took Clemson. Wanted to take the Buckeyes too but held off. Because I don’t trust JT Barrett. I think Ohio State just out athletes Wisconsin when properly motivated though.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah, I forgot the elf. 16-19 min allocated to elf placement. Busted.

  28. I’m sitting by my newly finished pool having a drink. It was 85 degrees today so I jumped in the pool. I’m looking forward to the spring/summer. Especially since I’ve already hired a pool service company.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Van Ginkel is such a Wisconsin name.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I hate you and your warm pool, Mark.

    ReplyDelete
  31. And I never knew Danimal had a tantric side to him.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I wouldn’t call my pool warm just yet but it’s certainly better than I have any right to expect in December. If Wisconsin wasn’t a total fraud they’d win this game.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Barrett is not a good QB. Buckeyes are so stacked they can get away with him. Wisconsin's fat kicker Rafael Gaglianone is my favorite player today.

Clemson has been the best team by far today of all playoff teams today. I am afraid Bama will sneak in ahead of the Buckeyes. I hope that doesn't happen. SEC doesn't deserve two schools this year.

  34. Our dog licked up my kids puke last weekend (there was a lot of it and I had to leave the room during cleanup) and now he’s super sick. I feel really bad for him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You are right on Clemson, but Oklahoma was 1b.

    ReplyDelete
  36. danimal, tuscarora is my kids' school. it was opened 7-8 years ago in the thriving leesburg metroplex.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Bama do ant deserve to get in. I don’t really think Ohio State does either though.

Clemson looks good but I have doubts about Bryant. I’ll reluctantly take Oklahoma based on Baker.

I pointed out the fat Italian kicker to my wife. Because I will never pass up a chance to mock Italians. Most overrated gene group ever.

    ReplyDelete
  38. And to follow up on my Italian shade, my wife needs help getting to Netflix through Rocky for the 30th straight weekend (approximately).

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ayo!! Fug yoo ya fuggin batchegaloop. We taught da world ta eat!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Kicker is Brazilian, but keep mocking those Italianos!

    ReplyDelete
  41. By “Rocky”, I meant Roku. Italians are still stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The frenetic field guy on the Big 10 field is mesmerizing. Zero chance he knows exactly what he's doing, but A for effort. He's like a squirrel. Not our squirrel, but a squirrel.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Fat kickers are fun. Regardless of heritage.

    ReplyDelete
  44. it's hard for me to argue that alabama deserves to get in, but if the primary competition is ohio state, there's no chance in hell saban loses to iowa by 30. that's my closer.

    ReplyDelete
  45. What is the ethnicity of Fumagali? Is there a country called Swarthistan?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Alabama deserves to get in more than Ohio State. But I’m not here to discuss the merits of hell.

  47. Meyer's wife chews gum with her mouth open. Huge pet peeve.

  48. If only she had the class exhuded at GTB.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The president just told everyone to sue ABC if they lost money in the stock market. That's a whole new level of wtf.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Also wtf: "Hand on the Pump" came on during zson's 8-and-under tennis lesson.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I cranked Sabbath’s Iron Man for my two sons today while we were driving. Everybody loved it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hand on the Pump still bangs. Most of that first Cypress Hill album does.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh that album holds up tremendously, it just seems like an odd fit for a bunch of first- and second-graders and middle-aged women. I'll never tire of "I'm heading up a river with a goat and a paddle and I'm handing out beatdowns."

    ReplyDelete
  54. My local sandwich shop just got Hop Gun (Funky Buddha) on tap. This could be trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  55. On the topic of old school hip hop that still holds up, Naughty by Nature’s Uptown Anthem was cranked in my car w/ my kids recently. Not entirely appropriate. At one point, I said to mysef “Oh yeah, he says ‘chillin with a titty feeling villain.’” I think my kids missed that reference.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Or maybe that's just part of their day-to-day experience living with you.

    ReplyDelete
  57. My wife somehow found Schindler's List on a cable channel. She's watching that in her bedroom. Her horniness level is less than zero.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Frank Gore's career numbers are surprising as hell. He's 400-some-odd yards behind Curtis Martin for #4 all-time rushing yards. He's just a tremendous compiler.

    ReplyDelete
  59. You made out in Schindler's List?!?

  60. Had to take my dog to the vet today because he’s been throwing up, stopped eating and was super lethargic. They’re keeping him overnight and he may have full renal failure. Not good. Not very cheap either.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I fucking love Uptown Anthem.

    ReplyDelete
  62. anyone use an amazon fire stick or similar device for streaming stuff? recommendations? same question about the amazon alexa thingy.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Apple TV is my shit. Not only can you steam all sorts of shit you can stream music or other content from your iPhone or iPad to the Apple TV which sends it to your TV and speakers. So it's also a ghetto Sonos.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I’ve got Apple TV and concur with Z. I also have Roku in a couple smart TVs. It’s more than adequate for streaming. We have a google home. It’s cool. Also a ghetto sonos. Good sound though.

  65. It does not seem very “rock and roll” for the Rock and Roll HOF to close at 5:30 PM.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Rock and Roll isn't as young as it used to be Marls. Gotta close up so they don't miss the early bird special.

    ReplyDelete
  67. We had to put our dog down today. He had massive amounts of cancerous tumors in both kidneys.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Mark, so sorry to hear that. The loss of a pet is a real kick in the gut.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Mark - I'm sorry to hear that. That is terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  70. My condolences. Dogs are great, loyal pets.

  71. Godspeed Mayfield. You were super fly.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thanks y’all. It came out of nowhere. He was seemingly healthy just a week ago. His decline was rapid and drastic but he was suffering by the end. Really dreading telling my five year old this evening.

  73. tomorrow may make gheorghemas history

    ReplyDelete
  74. You mean the latest start of Gheorghwali ever?

    ReplyDelete
  75. In a stunning turn of events, during zson's parent-teacher conference I learned that he is generally disinterested in class and prefers to goof off, but when challenged he will display flashes of brilliance making it clear that he can do all the stuff the teacher wants him to do when the mood strikes him. He's the class slacker and the class clown. I have no idea where he got that from. The teacher is completely flummoxed.
