I'm 45. I'm a Man.

I love a good whiskey, but I've never found much to like about Scotch. Try as I might, I haven't been able to develop an appreciation for the taste of peat.

But last night, a breakthrough.

A neighborhood friend with a penchant for the stuff hosts a Scotch party every six months or so, giving us neophytes a chance to try things we wouldn't usually. I go mostly for the camaraderie, though I try gamely to enjoy the tipples.

Last night, the first two Scotches on offer were more of the same for me, but the evening's final pour was a revelation.

Bruichladdich's The Classic Laddie "is unpeated, floral and complex." It's also "trickle distilled from 100% Scottish barley using much of the original Victorian machinery." You should know that "the methods employed by the craftsmen to coax the spirit into being continue unchanged." And that it "matures for all its life in warehouses on the shores of Loch Indaal and is bottled at the distillery using Islay spring water."

I don't know much about all that, but I do know that it's the first Scotch I actually wanted to drink. And for that, it's a blessing.

  4. You should try Tallisker Storm. Peaty and briny but in a pleasant way.

  5. Islay scotches are known for their peaty flavor b/c of the unique peat indigenous to the island (off the west coast of Scotland) that is used.

I'm off brown liquor myself these days. The consumption was getting a bit aggressive on a daily basis. I don't have that problem w/ wine and vodka.

  6. Tribe looking phenomenal early. Dedmon just took a punt to the house.

  7. I expected Florida to come out a little flat today after last week and with the game being an early kickoff. So I took Vandy +12.5 in the first half. So that was a winner. Now I'd like Florida, and Treon Harris, to wake the fuck up.

  9. Hey, have y'all seen the Whisky advent calendar ? I think there's a gin one and cognac, too. They're pricey, but kind of cool. Mini bottles of pretty high quality stuff you wouldn't normally get to drink because they are super expensive (or I should speak for me and mine...we wouldn't be able to)...might have to buy the whisky one for husband this year. (If I knew how to link the picture and blurb about it, I would, so sorry you'll have to google if interested.)

  10. When did they start calling (i.e. not calling) false starts like traveling in basketball. I have seen a half dozen plays today with guards shifting to carry out a pull that should have been flagged.

  20. the tackling in this alabama/lsu game is textbook

  21. Defense is rarely the issue in this game. Offense, especially passing, on the other hand...

  22. It's rare that I root for a team other than Florida but I'm mildly rooting for LSU. Because I think Florida could possibly beat them in Atlanta. I don't feel that way about Bama.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LSU has figured out you can throw deep on Bama if your online can hold up. That's been the case for a couple years now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. yep. alabama's front 7 is giving the secondary the stink eye.

  25. As they should. And Jacob Coker is still shitty.

  26. really interesting doings at missouri. black football players are joining a campus-wide protest against the university president for his mishandling of several recent racial incidents. players are saying they won't practice or play until the president steps down. this could set a fascinating precedent.

  27. I just read up on the whole thing and what led up to this at Mizzou. This is monumental if they go through with it.

  28. In far less consequential news, Memphis can get the fuck outta here.

  29. and brandon harris just threw a turrrible pick

  30. college football and hoops players have a shitload of leverage if they could learn how to use it. the downstream effects of the mizzou thing are potentially huge.

  31. i'm legit stunned by what bama's done to fournette thus far

  32. Georgia boosters are talking themselves into Kirby Smart as I type this. Be careful, Dawgs.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I didn't think Bama would do THIS to Fournette but I'm not shocked they have the upper hand. That front 7 is beastly. Which is why I thought, and stated, that Bama would smash UGA and Nick Chubb earlier this season. The secondary is the weakness for Bama? Brandon Harris has to win this game.

And he still can because...Coker is awful.

  39. Successful mini summit spanning 1987 to 1996. My lack of OBTF attendance was addressed and will be rectified.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Just get be the ball to Derrick Henry.
