Watch This Documentary About Sam Berns

I met Sam Berns about 12 years ago when he was 5 or 6. I hadn't though about him in almost a decade until I read Rick Reilly's story about Sam's visit to a Patriots practice. I was more surprised to hear that Sam is alive than to see his name on ESPN's website. Here's why.

Life According To Sam - Trailer from Fine Films on Vimeo.

You can watch Sam's documentary on HBO Go. And you should.

  1. I will not watch this at work. I will lose my street cred if folks see my crying.

No idea what it's about, but it looks like something that will make me cry.

  3. I remember Sam from some short sement - I think he was featured on Bryant Gumbel's show several years ago. His story is definitely lump-in-the-throat material and it's easy to be completely won over by his awesome outlook. Keep it up, Sam.

  5. speaking of crying, and not taking for granted the people close to you, a family in our community just brought hospice care in to ease their 10 year-old daughter's suffering in the final stages of her battle with cancer. this little girl has been a complete badass in the year since her diagnosis, raising money, awareness, and hopes in a very public campaign to fight both her cancer and the disease in general. sadly, it looks like cancer's going to win. according to her mother's facebook post yesterday, the little girl (her name is bri - short for gabrielle) has been asking how much time she has left. no kid should ask that, and no parent should have to try to answer it. fuck you, cancer.

so hug yours when you have a chance - perspective's hard to come by when you're stuck in the everyday. i spent a good part of this morning yelling at my 12 year-old for whining. and now all i want to do is hold onto her and not let her go.

  6. Our area just dealt with a similar issue w/ a 4 y/o girl who recently passed from an inoperable brain tumor. My wife was the dad's junior prom date. Awful experience for all involved, although it brought the community together. Not a great silver lining, but hopefully better than nothing.
