No longer the Hostess with the Mostess

Sad news, friends. Word comes today that Hostess is going out of business. I'm weeping into a chocolate cupcake as I type this:
Hostess, the makers of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread, is going out of business after striking workers failed to heed a Thursday deadline to return to work, the company said.
The Hostess shutdown will lead to over 18,000 laid off workers, and the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes and 570 bakery outlet stores in the U.S. The clock is ticking, though - consumers only have a few more days to load up on already baked products. "OUT OF MY WAY, THOSE ARE MY SUZY Q'S!!!"

Oh yeah, this kid's an orphan now, too. Jerks.

Let's try to remember the corporate behemoth in better times:

Oh yeah, I pretended to be an expert on South Florida men's hoops yesterday. Read it if you'd like.

  3. does hostess make "the chocodile"? that was always my favorite, although "ding dong" is a fantastic product name as well.

scary story contest night in my neck of the woods. i hope i defend my title!

  4. Yes, I believe the Chocodile, as well as the Ding Dong and the Ho-Ho, are Hostess products.

  5. I bet Mitt Romney is behind this.

  6. I have a scary story for you - a 3 y/o boy trips in his house, hits his mouth against a bench, knocks his teeth crooked and has to have an oral surgeon remove his 4 top middle teeth.

That story is my Friday afternoon. Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

in completely unrelated news, my driver to heathrow this morning was romanian. we discussed gheorghe, among many other eurosport topics. he asked me how tall billy crystal is.

  10. I read TJs take on Sout Florida hoops yesterday. Impressive. I think. Have to be honest, I don't pay much attention to South Florida hoops, or anything for that matter. USF girls were/are pretty slutty but I'm a married type now so I've got no interest in such things.

  11. that sucks TR. and i will use that plot for next year.

as far as this year, i defended my title, motherfuckers! took home the cash and the bragging rights.

the people will really be gunning for me next year.

  12. dave, we assume you'll be posting the story here.

  13. I hope t.r. Jr is doing okay today. You should get him some bling.

    ReplyDelete
  14. TR Jr now looks like Clark Gillies (google it I you don't know the name), but he's back in the saddle, being the same reckless kid he was y/day morning.

  21. Any upsets tonight? I have had a feeling about Baylor for the better part of the week but probably wishful thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I kind of liked Baylor. Not enough to wager on it though.

This just in: My kid loves Joey Bada$$. We've listened to it quite a bit tonight while Mom was out at dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jmu about to blow another.

    Rob, how we doing?

  30. your ashington izards, still sans w.

danimal, haven't picked ron up yet - just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wvu has a great flag football team

    ReplyDelete
  32. Both kstate and Oregon will win. Momentum has shifted.

    ReplyDelete
  33. A Dooley failing and helping tear down the Tennesee football program at the same time is about as good as it gets in my world.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Agreed on K-State and Oregon. Both absorbed early body blows. Will be much better in the 2nd half.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mark....UT? Bama? Spurrier? Kiffin? nd? Who do you hate the most and in what order?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh man, Vols are gonna lose by 30+ tonight. Giggity.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Schools: Tennessee (by a WIDE margin), FSU and UGA equally then Notre Dame followed by Bama. Not real fond of Miami either.

    Coaches: Kiffin, Saban, Richt.

And he's not been a coach for a very long time but I absolutely loathe Vince Dooley. And now I project that hate on his son.

    ReplyDelete
  38. So next week....USC vs nd? You have to root for Kiffin. How does that feel?

    ReplyDelete
  39. After my Saturday night BJ ('s wholesale club trip), I am quite excited at seeing these potential upsets.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I wonder how Mark will feel when UGA finds its way into the championship game.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Holy shit. Baylor's INT was one of the dumbest throws ever.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah...Jmu lost. They r the vatech of the caa.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'll say. There will be no upsets here unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Can't believe how bad a pass that was by Baylor. Shaping up to be a big night for my remote's "Last" button.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Stanford did this same fucking thing last year w Oregon...Oregon will win this by 3+ touchdowns now.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't know, but he sure has pretty eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm okay with rooting for Kiffin next week because a loss means he's definitely fired. I'd like him to stick around and run USC into the ground for a while.

And I'll worry about UGA in the BCS Championship game when it's a reality. Which is to say, no time soon. No faith in Richt in a big game and an SEC Championship game versus Bama with a BCS title shot on the line would be the biggest game of his career.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Love that Baylor call to go for it on 4th. Play to win.

    ReplyDelete
  49. To Dan's point about Stanford. They were up 21-0 on Oregon two years ago in Autzen. Lost by 3 TDs. Kansas State-Baylor looks like game of the night. Might be tough to beat LSU-Ole Miss for game of the day though. That was fun.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This Stanford D has been tremendous tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I take that back, Oklahoma-West Virginia is the current 'game of the day' winner.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I had to work an Indian-American Physicians conference beginning at 7 am. Then watched the baby all night. I'm off now and the whiskey...she be flowing.

    ReplyDelete
  53. K State is toast. And we now need to re-think our Heisman front-runner. Would 't mind Te' o winning.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm with you Mark. Been denting my handle of Makers pretty aggressively. Sunday morning gym looking unlikely.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I just got started because their are three 11 year old girls spending the night here tonight (for a total of four) but there's no end in sight.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Seriously, time to tune in to WVU-OU if you haven't already. Barn. Burner.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Have been ignoring the okla game til now. Shazam.
For stanford to still be in this game is very surprising.
Biased yes....but give me some te'o...

    ReplyDelete
  58. I guess i'll pour something since u guys are.
    Okla wins this. My prediction

    ReplyDelete
  59. Te'o is a beast. I really like him. Not often I say that about a dormer but he looks like the real deal.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Stepfan, Lache and Glasco having big games today. One first name dumber than the next.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wow. Geno just threw a gem. Crazy trio of games here.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Happiest degenerate gamblers tonight: those who bet the under in Stanford-Oregon.

And this OU-WVU game is largely meaningless but completely AWESOME.

    ReplyDelete
  63. OT seems inevitable. Make this 2-pointer!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Don't forget about Tavon, TR.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The problem there is wv scored too quickly. If i could bet a few grand on this last drive i would.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ok...not a few grand but maybe a hundo or 2

    ReplyDelete
  67. And you're looking pretty smart right now.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Is that a catch? I think so.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Not a tough call to me. He landed out of bounds when he got possession.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Like the upset potential, but don't like the call.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Can you find a team that was ranked #5 after 5 games that did not end up going to a bowl?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ok,....was mistaken on the kstate prediction.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Thought he had it in one arm on the way down. And yes, I'm happy this is going OT.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Is Candy Maldonado's kid kicking for them?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Like Stanford in OT, grinding this out on the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think I would have to take Oregon here though hope I am wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I retweeted Fuad Reveiz's kid tonight so I really hope you're right about Candy's kid.

Related: Not a Giants fan or a jersey wearer but I'd wear an old Giants "Candy" or "Chili" jersey.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Ducks are gonna miss this figgie.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Shit. Holy shit. Holy shit.

    ReplyDelete
  80. no one wants to play for the national championship.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Kelly prematurely iced the kicker.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Nick Saban has a serious horseshoe up his ass.

    ReplyDelete
  83. It's okay to act excited, Brent and Kirk.

    ReplyDelete
  84. The Oregon fans have not moved. They are stunned motionless. College football is amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  85. SNL w/ Renner kicking off...

    ReplyDelete
  86. It speaks to the absurdity of the BCs that with a Notre Dame loss to USC and a Florida win at FSU (not likely), The Gators would play in the BCS Championship game.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I've been in the position of those Oregon fans. Early December 2001 against Tennessee. It's an awful feeling. But College Football is fucking awesome.

    Let's have another.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Chris christie on snl....our next president....if he doesnt die first.

    ReplyDelete
  89. that was a preposterous evening. here me now and believe me later, usc beats notre dame, leading eventually to an alabama/florida national championship game. and an absolute supershitstorm of righteous indignation from the media. can't wait.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Can somebody walk me through the SEC championship probabilities? Too lazy to effort it up myself.

Is there a chance a 1-loss team can miss out on the SEC title game but get into the national championship game?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yes. Florida beats FSU next week. USC beats ND. Florida would be #3 in the BCS behind Bama and UGA, who meet in the SEC Championship game.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Also. I ate a pound of bacon for breakfast. Delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  93. It is going to be a long week.
