G:TB Academy Award Preview

In a bit of an unusual development, Team G:TB is fairly excited for Sunday's Academy Awards. Well, sort of. We couldn't care less about 98% of the categories for which Oscar will be awarded, and we care even less than that for the self-indulgent acceptance speeches about the "craft" of acting. But we do have a significant rooting interest in the Best Original Song category, where Bret McKenzie (of 'Flight of the Conchords fame) puts his 'Man or Muppet' up against 'Real in Rio' by Sergio Mendez and Carlinhos Brown (lyrics by Siedah Garrett). Three on one really isn't a fair fight, but when you've got Muppets on your side, anything's possible.

  1. Carry over from the last post. I don't believe Zman ever witnessed a booze induced sangria fight at Unit M. Beware of flying fruit from Dave.

  2. i can attest to the fact that getting hit square in the head with a grapefruit hurts, drunk or not.

i haven't checked, but i feel really out of it regarding this year's movies.

  3. I've seen all of the Best Picture noms except Midnight In Paris. Hugo was the best film. It won't win, but it's the best of the bunch. The Tree of Life was a close #2. Two entirely different movies; but brilliant in their own way.

  4. Moneyball is nominated, right? Well, then I've seen one of them.

And I am going to see The Descendants tomorrow, I think that got a nod as well.

  6. Here's an unexpected development: I just plunked down a sizeable sum for my children and me to go see Mike Love. Woulda bet against that.

Okay, so we are going really to see the genius of Brian Wilson and thereby have to deal with Mike Love and his ballcap, but still...

  11. It is better to look good than to feel good. Or play good.
