Jonathan Brandis? Really? The co-star of Ladybugs?

Bitter old Mets fan Whitney is funny.

Whitney said...

Yeah, well, when I was a kid back in the day, sonny boy, the New York Yankees . . . were winning World Series and the Mets sucked. So, uh, I guess not much has changed.

Whit, remember, you're a huge college football fan now, what with Dennis' college pick 'em league and your CBS Sportsline team (which I don't think you ever check)...so focus all your energies on that.

Whitney said...

Dennis tried to wedge me out of contention this week in the pick 'ems, but I squeaky-wheeled my way back in...

Whit: Your Mets owned NYC in the 1980's, so you've only really been a bitch to the Yanks for the last 15-20 years. Too bad those 1980's teams snorted white lines better than they played between them. It's a travesty that the squad only played in 2 postseasons and 1 World Series, although Whitey Herzog's teams had something to do with that.

I think you should start brainstorming ideas for re-naming your other website.

That World Series really sucked. If Philly blew the lead in game 5, there would've been a little redeeming value.

Is Cake as good a band as Pandora portrays them to be? I can see why they're too ironic and witty to ever be huge, but they seem to kick a fair amount of ass. Anybody seen them live?

Whitney said...

Has Cake done anything lately? I haven't seen them live, but I've heard some live stuff and it was fair. A little rough, as McCrea or whatever his name is was even more talky and less melodic. But that was a while ago.

I love Fashion Nugget. Motorcade of Generosity & Prolonging the Magic are a moderately close 2 and 3 in my book.

zman said...

Cake is ok but not fantatic. I saw them live once, and the "real" band is the lead singer and the trumpet/keyboard player. Everyone else is just there to do whatever those two write for them. It was a pretty fun show, but I don't have them on my list of "bands to see whenever they're playing nearby." The King Khan and BBQ Show, however...

Whitney said...

If you had a list of 5 (or maybe 10) bands that were must-see just about every time they come around, who'd make the list? (It's assumed this list is oft-changing, so based on right now.)

I saw Death Ledger open for John Cougar Concentrationcamp at Pangea last week. Sick show.

Saw Cake at 9:30 Club a couple years ago (w/ Gogol Bordello who I knew nothing about at the time, but turned out to be energetic as hell and brilliantly effing insane). They were a great show actually. No frills sort of thing with audience playing a huge part - which is always good times...I almost went out and bought one of those little rattler devices the lead singer plays randomly during any song. It seemed like an instrument that takes no discernable skill to master. I couldn't help but think of the cowbell bit every time he rang it..."What this song needs, is more rattle". "I gotta have more rattle".

There are acts I have seen, like:

Alvis & the FTW Band (insane Elvis impersonator)
King Khan and BBQ (imagine if the short guy from Greasetruck wrote doo-wop and rockabilly songs, Jack White and Dan Auerbach played them, and Terry Date produced the album)
Allman Brothers (has to be at the Beacon)
Brian Jonestown Massacre
The Go! Team

And acts I really want to see but continually have scheduling/RV issues:

KRS-One (allegedly the best live act in hipop, but I don't know because of a terrible story)
Flaming Lips
Black Keys
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (terrible story about that one too)

And acts I'd like to see but never seem to find them on tour:

Al Green
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Is H-Town still touring?

T.J. said...

They are...and Fingerbang is opening for them.

i'm not very hip

Herm Edwards recently on First Take (yes, I'm that bored):

"Don't hurt the game(stops...begins to realize he's screwed up the phrase)...and, the player."

How could this man ever get a head coaching job in the NFL, much less two?

Jerry said...

I like to check out Marleybone, Graham's Crackers, and The Vindictives. All their live stuff is better than anything they've done in the studio.

Mark said...

So...there's a player on Siena's basketball team named Just-In'Love Smith?

Give me. A fucking. Break.

T.J. said...

Come on, seriously?

T.J. said...

Wow, he's a graduate of Columbia High and then Harvard on the Hudson...MENSA meetings are not far off.

Mark said...

Yes, he's a walk-on. And his mother is a jackass.

zman said...

I thought that was a joke. But it isn't. Mr. Smith's Q&A is pretty interesting.

had a buddy from way back, like pre-lemoyne bball camp - justin time timmons
he was never late, regardless of when he arrived

Z-cock, regarding the live bands (apologies to the rest of you for esoteric mentions), I will try hard not to miss:

Wilco
Old 97's
Drive-By Truckers
They Might Be Giants
Ween
Avett Brothers
Cracker/CVB

And the next crappy Bruce show will be the 1st one. (Shlara commented accordingly a couple of days ago.) Saw U2 for the first time a month ago, and would again.

I've given up on:
Buffett
The Cult
Dylan (terrible when I've seen him)

Would still like to see for the 1st time:
AC/DC
Stones

Whitney said...

Guys, we just realized that Rob is missing today. Everybody check your shoes.

mayhugh said...

Wait... Jonathan Brandis is dead? I just excused myself from a meeting to confirm this on Wiki.

T.J. said...

Rob is in a meeting all day...his boss is such a slave driver.

rob said...

i would've gone montalban there, teej

zman said...

DBT is definitely on my short list, they kick ass live. Bad job by me leaving them off.

I don't get Wilco. They just don't do it for me. I'm not saying they suck, they just don't resonate with me. I'm not afraid, however, to say that Jimmy Buffett sucks.

I don't enjoy big venues. Even W&M Hall is too big, I think. I've seen Bruce before, but my seats were a million miles away (section 317 at Gillette) and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I doubt he has plans to play any small venues any time soon.

Bad live acts:

Slick Rick (if it even really was him)
Smashing Pumpkins
Dutch (worst show ever)
Bob Denver (when he was alive)

Mark said...

I'll contribute with some groups/individuals I've seen that are great live:

DJ Shadow
Talib Kweli
NOFX
Slipknot (first album)
Atmosphere
Tribe (two great shows about 8 years apart)
Blackalicious
Rancid
Hieroglyphics
Cypress Hill (during their prime...early 90s)

Mark said...

I left out Murs and Little Brother, both are quite good live. (The Roots and Outkast are as well but those seemed obvious and neither tour muci, if at all, anymore).

Jerry said...

I know Pat Benetar rarely performs live!!! Scalp the damn tickets!

rob said...

so joe girardi risked his life to assist a woman after a car accident last night? yet one more shitty decision by him overshadowed by a good outcome. due respect for the heroism and all.

Whitney said...

I like Girardi, despite the whole Yankee thing. The upside is that it some small way it's a slap in the face of the mildly retarded Marlins management who scrapped him a few years back.

Whitney said...

And it's Benatar, asshole. Who doesn't know that?

Mark said...

The kind of assholes who mock you and TR with their gay boyfriend on their blog.

Michael said...

Barry Manilow puts on a mean show. TJ can confirm this statement.

TR said...

I saw Benatar 2 yrs ago. Got tix for the wife's b-day. Lots of greatest hits, lots of gay men and lots of women acting like they were at a bachelorette party.

zman said...

Chris Webber should fire his tailor immediately.

Manilow AND Diamond put on mean shows.
