Kicking Off the Week with Joy

Let's get this holiday week rolling with smiles on our faces, shall we.

We told you the story of Joel Dahmen's rollercoster weekend in the comments, but in case you missed it, our favorite golfer entered this week's RSM Classic in Saint Simons Island, GA in 124th in the season-long PGA TOUR standings. The top 125 golfers on the list retain their full playing privileges for the following season. The cruel reality of finishing on the wrong side of that line means a year of uncertainty, lower-level tours, and scrambling to get back to the bigs.

On Friday, Dahmen needed a five-foot par putt on 18 to make the cut. He drained it. Saturday, he had a solid round going, until he took a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 16th. The resulting round of 70 left him on the outside looking in, sitting 128th on the season scoreboard entering the final round.

And yesterday, a player who's become beloved for his honesty and everyman mien showed us what he's capable of. After three straight pars to start his round, Dahmen did this:

That eagle from 110 yards got him started, and he took his round to six-under with a birdie on the 11th hole of his round (he started on the back nine). From there, he made seven straight pars to close with a 64, making a clutch five-footer on his last hole. Had he missed it, he would've finished 126th.

Our man got emotional after the round, as one might imagine.

Wild ride for a guy who's learning how to balance his game with his newfound acclaim. Here's to less stressful things in 2025.

  2. no idea why that video won't play. it's joel, his wife, and mark hubbard post-round after he learned that he was officially safe. tear-jerker.

  3. you should watch the video in the link above the non-functioning video. joel talks about the non-golf stuff he would miss if he wasn't a tour player - renting houses each week with his friends and their families, kids playing together, sharing experiences. sounds pretty gheorghie.

  4. i did watch that. very enlightening - never would have considered that aspect of being a pga tour pro. makes sense - what a way to grow up.

  6. a buddy of mine and some partners are opening what looks like it's going to be a very cool restaurant/bar in an 18th century building in our little downtown. i got to tour it today in a mid-construction phase. on the one hand, it'll be sweet to have a local i can walk to where i know the owners. on the other hand, that sounds a little dangerous.

  7. I just set my out of office message for the rest of the week. I rarely ever take this week off but I have a ton of vacation I have to take and the kid is out of school (and sports) all week so I plan to sleep in (relatively speaking) and relax as much as possible over the next six days.

  8. Jealous of Mark's out of office message. I have a new local opening in my neighborhood soon. A guy I knew in high school bought an existing spot in our little village a few years ago and swiftly ran it into the ground (payroll tax withholding is not optional).

A good chef I've known for years is joining up with a dude who ran bars in New Orleans for years to open Show Pony. Last I heard they're planning to do breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night. A terrible idea that I hope they scale back before they burn out.

  9. Oh yeah, they definitely need to scale that back. That’s entirely too much. Both in terms of quality of fare and staffing.

  10. I was walking by recently and saw the chef in there working on the space. He's tried to get into another line of work a few times in recent years, but keeps getting pulled back into the kitchen. I wished him well and requested that he not run himself into the ground getting this place running. We'll see, but it will be a good addition to the village.

  12. I lost my Air Pods and waited a few days to order new ones because ordering new ones guarantees I will find the missing ones, and when the new ones arrived today I opened my desk drawer to get my pocket knife to open the box and lo and behold, there were my missing Air Pods.

  13. Air Pods seem to be the easiest thing ever to lose. Always missing.

  14. OBXDave's partner in crime is back at the typewriter... pretty cool. Poor OBXDave is stuck with our band of misfits.

  16. My move is to ride my bike home with my airpods in and realize I've left the case at work. You guys do know you can use the 'find my' to make them play an ungodly sound, right?

  18. Find My didn’t work! They didn’t beep and my phone couldn’t even connect to them for some reason.

  19. Whit, some brief background on Comrade Teel's return to Hampton Roads typing duties: As he wrote, he was turfed by the Richmond paper and chain a couple months back, on a Zoom call with zero notice.

He also happened to be a finalist for a spot with The Athletic, the New York Times-owned site that permitted them to eliminate their own sports section. While waiting, the local outfit reached out and asked if he'd be interested in returning. He wasn't thrilled with Ath prospective job description. Combination of comfort and autonomy -- ability to call his own shots and be mostly left alone to do what he does -- carried the day. So he took his name out of consideration for Ath. Chose "the devil he knows" as he put it.

  20. Wait, Dave — so does he now have a gig or no?

  21. Unpopular opinion: I don’t think Cooper Flagg is all he’s been cracked up to be. .

  22. Whit, sorry I was unclear. He is back with Daily Press/Virginian-Pilot. He was finalist for opening with Athletic (no guarantee), but took himself out of running and decided to stay local after DP-Pilot offered.
