BREAKING: THE CAA

Rest assured that we'll be updating this webfomercial with our usual brand of half-assed, semi-informed, mostly-literate commentary about what this means for the Wrens.

  1. Everyone throws garbage at me whenever I say this, but W&M needs to join the Patriot League. Some of you cry at me, "Oh, but they're less competitive and it will be harder to recruit athletes if we move to the Patriot League!" That makes no sense to me. There will always be kids who want to go to W&M regardless of their athletic proficiency. And why is it a problem if we recruit less athletic but more academically-oriented kids? Did anyone go to W&M to watch the powerhouse teams?

  2. cosign, z. i've been on that wagon for a while. much better fit with w&m in many ways than the current caa (or any other league, really).

  4. I applaud TR’s use of wenus.

  5. All of these non-P5 conferences adding new teams is merely rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Co-sign on moving to the Patriot. Alternatively build a new league with like minded schools because the SEC, Big10 and Pac12 are about to blow shit up.

  6. Current D1 Schools for the nerd herd conference
    Colgate
    Rice
    Army
    Navy
    Air Force
    Holy Cross
    Tulane
    Lafayette College
    Georgetown
    W&M
Wake after they get booted from the realigned ACC
    Northwestern after the Big10 realigns

  7. Lehigh? Bucknell? Vanderbilt won’t want to leave the SEC but they might fit the profile.

  8. I do need a new car Z. My 15-year old Audi convertible is struggling.
And, I also need an EPL team. Whatever is the closest to AFC Richmond will work.

    ReplyDelete
  9. If the SEC goes full heel, tells the NCAA to fuck off and pays their players they might tell Vandy to beat it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Are we relegating the Tribe to a league where they get beat down regularly by vandy and wake?

    ReplyDelete
  11. working on it, shlara. might need to be a championship team, just like afc richmond at the moment.

  12. Not sure how the PAC-12 fits with the SEC and Big Ten. PAC-12 has two programs who’ve been nationally relevant in the last two decades and a bunch of other mediocre programs. Also, the fan bases are less than passionate.

Speaking of less than passionate, the Kansas athletics Twitter account just tweeted out that their stadium is open and free entry to anyone who wants to come because they’re trying to generate some sort of juice for a possible upset of Oklahoma.

  13. I strongly urge you all to tune into UCLA-Oregon to watch Oregon edge rusher Kayvon Thibadoux. He may be the #1 pick next year. He blows things up regularly and dominates in the way LT used to.

  14. TR becoming a PAC-12 guy, I like it

  15. Illinois-PSU is beyond brutal. 16-16, heading into 5th OT. Horrendous offensive play.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Still 16-16, heading into OT7

    ReplyDelete
  17. Penn state-Illinois is the most pathetic display of offensive football I’ve ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Glad to see TR is suffering with me.

  19. I plan on watching UCLA-Oregon. I planned on doing that 30-40 minutes ago. UCLA has a fun offense. Thibodeaux is a beast. The whole Oregon defense was nasty early this year but they’re really banged up now.

Cristobal has built a good program but the offense is really basic and will hold the program back long term, IMO.

But, Big Boi’s kid play RB for Oregon so that makes them 20% cooler.

    Go Illini!!

  20. maxi-summit at the usa/new zealand rugby tilt here in the nation’s capital. all-blacks lead 59-7 at the half. tight.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love UCLA’s home unis. Really wish they would build a stadium on or near campus. Pasadena is a fucking haul from Westwood.

  22. While I’m uniform watch:

    - Pitt bringing back the old school uniforms was an obvious, but genius move

    - Oregon’s informs today are great (most of their choices are)

    - There is no good reason for Ole Miss to not wear the powder blues

  23. Wake Forest-Army was a statistical unicorn. Deacs scored 70 with 17 minutes possession time total. Hartman, the QB, threw for 458 yds on just 23 completions. Army had ball for almost 43 minutes, rushed for 416 (3 guys over 90), scored 56, and still got boat-raced. Crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I just saw the score and was shocked. Army typically grinds teams down with time of possession. Wake has a good offense but not 70 point against a gold team level of offense.

    I’m really enjoying Clemson’s regression.

Lastly, while I don’t love the bill for the new fridge I had to purchase on my birthday, it’s a pretty sweet appliance.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have multiple appliance purchases ahead of me. We don’t need a fridge, but we do need stove/oven, microwave and dishwasher. And oh yeah - a new HVAC system. Lucky me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. There aren’t many people in America enjoying the demise of Clemson more than me.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Will Dabo stick around to fix this, or will he grab the pile of money LSU will throw at him?

    ReplyDelete
  28. He’s an idiot if he takes the LSU job. He’s a God at Clemson and the ACC is trash. Why would he choose to join the SEC West and play multiple intra-division opponents each year who are better than any ACC opponent he plays? The program has deep pockets and they recruit well. He needs to adjust his strategy (he doesn’t use the transfer portal and he doesn’t allow committed recruits to take other visits). He should do that and openly flirt and get a big raise. It’s a proven strategy (see Jimbo at FSU and Mike Gundy every fucking year).

If he’s half the coach he thinks he is, he’ll rule the ACC for another 5-10 years, minimum. UNC has been proven to be a fraud. FSU is still quite a ways way and Miami is probably firing another coach this offseason.

  29. Oregon's uniforms look like my windshield after flying through a brood of cicadas.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Or driving through the brood. FOGTB KD was at the Army game today. He says their safety is very slow.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I’m always a bigger fan of Oregon’s uniforms than most.

Also, watching Ole Miss destroy LSU really turned the knife on what I witnessed last weekend. If Mullen doesn’t fire Grantham (DC) the day after the season ends, he’s lost me as a fan.

  32. Jack Collinsworth has slid into a sweet gig. He’s just a few years out of Notre Dame and is already a featured guy on NBC’s football coverage. He’s not bad but there’s not a chance in heaven or hell he gets that job if he isn’t Cris Collinsworth’s kid (Astronaut High School, stand up!).

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ian Eagle’s kid got the play-by-play gig for the Clippers before he turned 25. But he is allegedly very good.

Nice life for him. 24 years old and making great coin in LA.

  34. I noticed that as well. Long list of that. Skip and Chip Caray being real high on said list.

Wife needed a can opener for sauce she’s making for tomorrow. Went across the street to borrow one from our neighbor Deon (half white/half Cherokee, Clemson grad and goat owner-of the aforementioned Leroy). They’re doing it up out there with paella and sangria. Wife wants to go back after we put the kid to bed. I’m gonna pass.

    Tennessee ain’t dead yet!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hard to pass on paella and sangria, although I’m fussy w/ sangria. It’s like a Bloody Mary to me - has to be really good or I can’t stand it. I like a full-on vegetable garden in my Bloodies - celery, olives, jalapeño, etc. And I want a ton of fruit in my sangria. Locks in the hangover.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I’m not big on sangria or bloodies. I’m also not a super social guy with people I don’t know well. Didn’t matter what I thought though, wife boxed up some sauce, grabbed herself a glass of wine and ditched me under the veil of “someone has to mind the house”. I’m semi-okay with it but I also know it would be good if I was social with the neighbors. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh, by the way, fuck the Braves.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I’m admittedly in the tank for ECU, both these helmets are fantastic. I could do without the yellow facemasks.

    ReplyDelete
  39. On the PAC12 comment, I added them because whatever mega-conference/league that gets put together will undoubtedly want the west coast media markets. UCLA, USC, and Oregon will definitely get invited to that dance.

I too am enjoying Clemson’s fall. As for Dabo, he might as well take the cash at LSU since I assume that Clemson is going to ditch the ACC and move to the SEC or the SEC mega league in the next few years.

  40. Thibodeaux’s stats yesterday: 2 sacks, 9 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble

  41. your boys got after it last night pre-, during, and post-game. it's been a looooooong day. someone took down a $650 bar tab. that someone was me.

    ReplyDelete
  42. we drank a metric fuckton of really good margaritas. it was worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's never a good idea to consume a large amount of booze all day long and then ask if the establishment happens to offer said margaritas in a pitcher. I know my liver did not need that extra push but damned if I didn't jump onboard the pitcher train.
