Our Man Jimmy Moran

We've talked about former William & Mary star Jimmy Moran here a handful of times over the years. Almost always, it's in the context of the ill-fated 1997-98 Tribe team that went 20-6 and tied for the CAA regular season title before losing in the first round of the conference tournament with Moran and all-league guard Randy Bracy (who, incidentally, is now a member of the Florida State Senate) hobbled by injuries. What might have been, friends. What might have been.

Moran went on to play for Gran Canaria in Spain for 10 seasons, becoming the first and still only player from that little island's team to have his number retired. In 2014, he became the Portland Trailblazers' assistant video coordinator, before being named a full-time assistant for the Blazers before the 2015-16 season. For the past two summers, Moran has coached Portland's NBA Summer League team.

And this summer, in what is certainly an omen - and I will brook no opposition to this point - Moran led the Summer Blazers to a championship.

Portland went undefeated in seven games in Las Vegas, capping their run with a 91-73 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship game. KJ McDaniels scored 17 points and grabbed 7 boards, Wade Baldwin added 14 and 4, with 6 assists, and Caleb Swanigan filled the stat sheet with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Obviously, Moran was the key. Here are his pre-summer-season thoughts about the team's priorities. Keep it simple, stupid always plays.

Moran leads the Blazers to a title. Marcus Thornton scored 14 today to help Armored Athlete advance to the second round of The Basketball Tournament.

It's all happening, Gheorghies.

  1. I love the name Tommy Fleetwood. Sounds like a Westchester gangster or a used car salesman.

  2. Put a few quid on he, Rory, and Rose to finish top 5 before the week. I need 1 to do so to get the money back, preferably him. Two would be grande.

  7. He’s just scraping it around now. Not sure if it’s mental or physical stamina, but he lacks one or both.

  10. What was a perfect trip has encountered its first issue. The issue being major storms in Orlando forced our flight to Tampa for refueling. Currently hanging out in the Tampa airport.

  13. We just walked into our house after a ton of delays. Could’ve been much worse though. Orlando airport shut down for quite some time today and a ton of flights were canceled. When we got off the plane the terminal was packed with stranded travelers.

Going to go pick up some bee pollen shortly.

  17. TR, my wife is starting a keto diet and i am tagging along. any tips?

  19. I've done Whole30 several times, which is similar to keto, but a bit more restrictive from what I read.

For me, the key is to plan ahead so you always have something available to eat. My favorite snacks have included a ham sandwich consisting only of ham, and dried mango with almond butter. The first 4-5 days are the hardest.

I've had good results, aside from realizing that dairy doesn't agree with me. My first go round I lost almost 30 lbs. My most recent stint ended 6 weeks ago, and I lost 17lbs which I've managed to keep off since.

  20. wow. that's a lot of weight. ham hamwich? i could eat that . . .

dried mango sounds good too, bu ti thought there was no fruit.

  23. Just ate at Tortuga’s and had a beer with one of our fratres. Rainy day here in the Outer Banks. Guy behind the counter at the ABC store said by 2:30 they had already done $30,000 of business. Sounds about right.

  24. I would drink plenty of water and prepare to be in a bit of a fog for a few days. If you stick to it, you will drop a ton of water weight. But it’s healthy b/c a carb-rich diet bloats you a bit.

Snacks that are fine: pork rinds, almonds, eggs, cheese, meat sticks (if they have enough fat), peanut butter. Watch the nut intake b/c a serving of almonds is very small. Blueberries and blackberries okay in small doses. Guacamole is okay, but have it w/ cucumber slices or Park Crisps or pork rinds. Cream cheese on celery is okay too.

I drink a bunch on keto - scotch or dry wine.

If u eat out, stick w/ Caesar salad, Cobb salad, or bunless bacon cheeseburger w/ broccoli instead of fries.

Whole Foods has an 88% cocoa chocolate bar. You can eat half a bar w/ some peanut butter and try and pretend it’s dessert.

  25. No immunity for Rick Gates in Manafort trial, I guess?

  26. One great upside to keto is eating the fat on a steak and not giving a fuck. Key to keto is getting enough fat. It’s a high fat diet, not a low carb diet.

  27. How can pork rinds be on the approved list for a diet plan?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Also, unrelated to pork rinds...
Tribe athletics is hyping this new logo a lot today.
Will they also be giving us a new mascot with pants?

  29. EPIC pork rinds are literally pork skin, so no carbs!

55% of calories are fat, 40% are protein and 5% are carbs. True keto is 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs.

These meat sticks are excellent as well: https://www.vermontsmokeandcure.com/products/

    Chipotle is my favorite flavor.
