Gheorghemas Break

We have it on good authority that Day Eight of Gheorghemas is in the works, but won't be completed in time to maintain our strict editorial calendaring standards. As such, please enjoy some filler, courtesy of Mr. KQ.

Last night, several of us convened at Marls' lovely new home in the wilds of Loudoun County, Virginia. Mrs. Marls, KQ, Shlara, Mrs. Rob, and Team KQ's girls gathered in the basement/theater to watch Hallmark holiday films, while Marls, Mr. KQ, and I hunkered down in the den to watch American football and drink beer.

Really, really, excellent beer.

Mr. KQ told us he was bringing Heady Topper, so we were much excited. But that legendary tipple was just the starting point. Here's the full menu:

Heady Topper/The Alchemist, Stowe, VT

I'm a bit tipsy, so I'll leave the review to the links above. But each of these beers are world class. Just like the Gheorghies. That's a fine way to end a week.

  1. bit of a scary intrusion of the way-too-real world on my 16 y/o kidlet last night. around 11:00, a friend texted her to say that she wanted to kill herself and that she'd swallowed some pills. my daughter told my wife (i'd already gone to bed, as i'm old and was nicely buzzed from the beers described in this post), who called the police while circling the wagons with other parents to try to reach the parents of the girl in question. after a bit of frantic texting and calling, they figured out that the police did show up at the girl's house with paramedics, and that they ascertained that she had in fact taken several prescription pills. they took the girl to the hospital. we don't know if she was actually in danger.

i'm pretty proud of my kid for taking this seriously and ignoring her friend's pleas to not 'snitch' on her. hard situation to deal with, and a reminder that she's dealing with grown-up shit earlier than i want her to.

  3. Good on your daughter, and nice parenting. Thoughts with the girl and her parents. Gut wrenching.

  4. On a positive note, my son and I along with a neighbor pal and his two boys attended the Jags game yesterday. Close to a full house and overflowing with electricity, I never thought I'd see the day.
Also, hearing rumors of Goodell influencing the call of the reviewed TD/incomplete pass in the Steelers Pats game. Not sure if that's a joke or possibly true. #verysad

  7. This reflects well on your kid for doing the right thing and you for raising her to do the right thing. Meanwhile, Do The Right Thing is 28 years old?

  8. Rob, I hope Fairbanks' post the other day inspired you to show your wife and daughter some appreciation for taking action while you were sleeping off your mini-summit bender.

  9. Sorry for your daughter's friend and family. Hope they're getting support they need! Certainly off to good start with having your kid as a friend. She rocked, as did your wife. It's sucky this is the gravity of some stuff kids are dealing with too!

  10. Did y'all see the VA news yet...Shelly Simonds has won the 94th in recount for House of Delegates. By 1 vote. 1!!! She is a member of the church my husband serves. YAY!!! Unreal. We are happy for NN, for our neighborhood, for her (she rocks - she's currently a member of School Board, was a teacher for long time), and for VA! This type of election shows our votes actually do matter.
