CNN and The Weather Channel report stories of homes devastated and lives lost, and government officials implore anyone in a storm's path to take higher ground in far-off safe havens.
The reality of most folks we know is somewhere in between. Batten down the hatches, meet in Danimal's safe room, and drink rum until she's gone.
As such, there should be some appropriately themed songs to soundtrack your experience. Let's spin a few...
New track says Irma is coming up the middle of the state and will be a high category 2 when it hits around here. Much better than what things looked like on Tuesday. Not totally terrible.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear, Mark. If we are to believe the weather folks. Which I don't.

Pearl Jam's Wrigley concert on the big screen, one night only despite the film's name: "Let's Play Two"
10/3 - AMC Tysons
https://pearljam.com/letsplaytwo/screenings/
I'll be checking it out at the Naro in Norfolk the same night.
Miami is going to get smacked. Some parts of SW FL too. East coast is the place to be.
ReplyDeleteOr you could be my brother in law who rented a cabin in Kentucky. Left at 5 am this morning. Took him 4 hours to get to St Augustine.
Bummer for Arlingtonians of yesteryear and today... Iota is closing down.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.popville.com/2017/09/oh-man-iota-closing-at-the-end-of-the-month/
Well that sucks. That place was cool.
ReplyDeleteWent to the local pub for lunch. Fucking packed. People around here have seen a ton of storms. Most are pretty nonplussed over Irma.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff Rob.
ReplyDeleteNeighbor mother hen left this a.m to head to Destin w some others that had rented a house. She drove 2'hours and didn't make it far. It was hell. She is back now.
Her husband and I put their storm shutters up. Relatively painless. Mine are in position but am going to wait til I absolutely have to b fore doing so bc mine are a major pain in the ass.
As Mark stated...it's sneaking left. East coast seems to be the right coast.
Have been to grocery store...wasn't awful. Ace Hardware...same. Had Mexican fare for lunch along with a Tecate in a can....bueno.
My 9'year old is lobbying for the shutters. Dammit.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteGood stuff Rob?
Damn you, Danimal! Damnimal!
good stuff, danimal
ReplyDeleteApologies Whit. I see in hindsight I distributed the credit incorrectly. Let's sum it up to Irma exhaustion. Yeah...F! Irma!
ReplyDeleteRob....I'm sure you've done something good today, no? If not, just keep it in your back pocket.
good luck floridians.
ReplyDeletei just wrote a masterpiece summary of my day over at sentence of dave. pretty weird stuff, even for me.
It was a good post with adventure and a very clever pun, but when you confessed that when you remove your pants you smell the ass-part to see if you can wear them again, you just lost me.
ReplyDeletewait, you people don't smell the seat of your pants and work-out shorts to see if you can wear them again? i thought this was standard operating procedure . . . Fogger taught me that trick back in college.
ReplyDeleteBc we didn't leave town, my wife has kept her store open and that includes tomorrow. No fewer than 5 people getting their dogs groomed. The store is in jax beach....mandatory evacuation by tomorrow night. I find this very odd. She confirmed w each of them today.
ReplyDeleteI always assumed that rob wrote all the posts here and all the intelligent ones at Sentence of Dave.
ReplyDeleteWhite people, Dan. White people.
ReplyDeleteWent out to dinner tonight and decided to see what the parking lot around the corner that houses two bars looks like (evacuation was at 3 today). Parking lot 75% full or more. People gives no fucks around here.
One of Rob's tweets posted on BuzzFeed. Is that fame?
ReplyDeletewait. what?
ReplyDeletebuzzfeed buried the lede. i did the same thing as those brits years ago.
ReplyDeleteIn a bar in Carlisle PA. They are blasting "One of these days".
ReplyDeleteIrma is a pretty tough hurricane to predict it seems. Just two days ago the eye was going to possibly pass over my town. As of the 8 am update, we now won't even get hurricane forces winds as the storm continues to move west. Weird. But I'll take it.
ReplyDeleteDid a few couch scotches last night. Boys kept nagging me to see the trailer for It. I then showed them that, as well as trailers for both seasons of Stranger Things, Misery, Cujo and Scary Movie. Taught them quite a lesson. They both slept w/ the lights on in their bedrooms.
ReplyDeleteThis was the Squirrel-tweet

A lot of quality football games on today. I'll happily sit on my couch watching them as the weather slowly deteriorates.
ReplyDeleteI love that the Buzzfeed ultimately linked to the GTB post that devolved (evolved?) into a discussion of bush waxing.
ReplyDeletei enjoyed that, as well, timmy.
ReplyDeletein local news, did you see that someone's opening a grilled cheese restaurant in downtown leesburg? much excite.
The Brooklyn hipsters are following us to Leesburg. Artisinal doughnut shops, grill cheese restaurants, Belgian beer halls. We are all going to have to grow handlebar mustaches.
ReplyDeleteIn unrelated news, Blue Oyster Cult is coming to the Tally Ho in January.
i'd like to know how i can see rob on buzzfeed. i don't really need to know that Blue Oyster Cult is still touring. They are a serious version of Spinal Tap.
ReplyDeleteWait, Spinal Tap isn't serious?
ReplyDeletesadly, no (except for "big bottom," or so i have read)
ReplyDeleteOne of the only restaurants still open happens to be a bar with an extensive beer list and smoked chicken wings. Quite the spot for the last meal outside of my home for at least the next 48 hours.
ReplyDeleteThe Costco in East Hanover NJ is a snapshot of America at its worst.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about that, Zambia. I had a full-fledged racial incident at the Costco in Bridgewater almost ten years ago.
ReplyDeleteWe're in for 10/3 Whit, cheers. Also, we'd join you for the DC or Richmond Carbon Leaf show, which hopefully would up your %?
ReplyDeleteHope you Florida boys stay safe.
I have a friend/old roommate from UF that lives in South Miami. He evacuated to Tampa. He's re-evacuating to Pensacola tonight at 3 am. We nearly evacuated to Tampa too. I've seen a lot of Hurricanes. This is the most remarkable, for a number of reasons.
ReplyDeleteZambia!
ReplyDeleteStay out of trouble in Florida.
Good luck Florida fam. Even the radio stations in the Scottish Highlands are talking about Irma
ReplyDeleteCNN's front page has a headline that says "Irma is lashing the tip..." Made me cringe for a couple reasons.
ReplyDeleteHoping thinks workniut well for our two Flo-ridahs.
Oregon - Nebraska went from very dull (Ducks up 42-14 at end of 3rd) to very interesting (Huskers down 42-28, but have ball at Oregon's 40 with 5 mins left after a pick).
ReplyDeleteMarls - I'm up for the Tally Ho show. Saw Agents of Fortune tour in '76 at Cap Centre. Twas the Tits. And yes, encore was (Don't Fear) The Reaper.
ReplyDeleteDrinking a Bringing Sexy Back ipa from Aslin, to which KQ commented "if only one could get it from a can"..
i couldn't care less about blue oyster cult, but i'm down with hanging out with my homies.
ReplyDeletei will refrain from the obvious can joke, though whitney won't.
zson has a tiger Cub Scout meeting every other Sunday from 3-4:30 starting tomorrow through May. I guess the scoutmaster hasn't heard of the NFL and the late start time is to accommodate everyone's churchgoing schedule.
ReplyDeleteIs the joke along the lines of "Stay out of Old's business?"
ReplyDeleteAnd If I ever win a major tennis tournament I want to react like Sloane Stephens and not like Roger Federer.
ReplyDeletejames franklin is a diiiick
ReplyDeleteThe can bait in mr. KQ's comment was to lead you away from the fact that he saw a major rock show before a number of gheorghies were born.
ReplyDeleteThe catch by Godwin in the ND-UGA game. My God.
ReplyDeletesaw rob on buzzfeed! and walked down memory lane in the comments section . . . lots of bush-waxing!
ReplyDeleteWas a good one. Pretty good game here too. Nd's D immensely improved upon last years. And if UGA can clean up their penalty issues they are going to make a mark in the SEC.
ReplyDeletesorry for the exclamation points, long day of soccer tourney-- my team had an 8 AM game and alex's team had a 6 PM game . . . i am last person awake in my house.
ReplyDeleteThoroughly enjoying the Buckeye/Urban loss in progress.
ReplyDeleteMy one ND prediction....with their heavy reliance on QB Winbush, he doesn't make it beyond game 6 of season.
ReplyDeletedanimal, were you supposed to be in columbus today?
ReplyDeleteWatching OSU catch an L is never bad. Mayfield is never going to be a pro but he's damn good in college.
ReplyDeleteUSC looks legit. ND-UGA is fun.
Rob....missed our version of obft for 1st time ever, 18 years. I bailed a month ago bc of an out of town weekend long swim meet and wife not being able to get away from store. Turned out I would have had to bail anyway due to this C Irma.
ReplyDeleteNd doesn't have the offensive juice to pull this out. Very sad.
ReplyDeleteKid 2 had ER visit #10 tonight. Ultimately uneventful (nerf gun bullet to eyeball, which we feared caused another corneal abrasion), but not the way I wanted to spend three hours.
ReplyDeleteTo make things worse, he lost a tooth today. So he's just dozing off now and I need him to fully conk out before I sleep. So it's scotch time.
