Kendrick Lamar is among the most buzzed-about of today's hip hop artists. His performance with Imagine Dragons at the 2014 Grammys gained him mainstream notice (in this case, mainstream as defined by forty-something suburban dads), and his incendiary rendition of 'The Blacker the Berry' and 'Alright' at the 2016 Grammys was among the best things that ceremony has ever seen.
He dropped a new album this week entitled DAMN, and while I'm certain the old rap heads here have heard it, I can't recommend it enough for one and all. That it's really excellent is only part of the story. Rumors abound that he's about to release a second record right on top of this one.
Damn, indeed.
Check out HUMBLE, my favorite track on the new record here:
DNA is my favorite track on the new album. If you like Kendrick I recommend going back and listening to Section 80. His first full length. Before he signed a major deal. Ronald Reagan Era and HiiiPower are especially good. Also, listen to The Recipe. My favorite California themed rap song of all time.
ReplyDeleteLet's be clear on one thing - Kendrick is no Sophie B. Hawkins.
ReplyDeletethis is a fair point
ReplyDeleteUnpopular opinion alert: I like Lance Stephenson.
ReplyDeletei like kendrick lamar, but he's a bit cerebral (read, not superfun and takes a lot of concentration to listen to).
ReplyDeleterun the jewels, on the other hand, were just on "wait wait don't tell me" and also did this masterpiece:

One of the wisest decisions I've made as an adult was when I told my parents that, "No. I'm not going to sunrise service.
ReplyDeletewatching isaiah thomas during warmups is heartbreaking
ReplyDeleteI can't find one of my fav Easter photos: me, Big Gheorghe & the Easter Bunny on the WH lawn for the Easter Egg Roll during the Clinton years. I remember that I looked awful but the photo was excellent. The Easter Bunny was excited to meet Gheorghe.
ReplyDeleteFor anybody with a lot of time to kill (likely on a flight), Joe Ragan has a highly amusing podcast w/ Kevin Smith from last fall. They get high as hell and have a rambling discussion that touches on many topics (Trump, chickens, cannibalism, Noam Chomsky and more). I used to think Rogan was a meathead, but he's a guy w/ shockingly insightful views on science, fitness, sports and other topics.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, my wife allowed our kids to bring their Easter baskets into their rooms before bed. This has turned out to be a terrible decision.
The Rockets' fans red shirts are ruining my viewing experience. I'm amused by their MVP chants for Harden. OKC fans will respond in force.
