Kobe is a George

Kobe Bryant is undeniably one of the greatest players in NBA history, and one of the most electric athletes American sports has ever seen. I've never been a huge fan, but it's impossible not to respect his achievements, and his will to win.

He's being lauded today at the end of his career, after closing the book on that amazing run with a 60-point effort against the Utah Jazz. Sixty points is an incredible tally.

Equally incredible is the 50 shots he required to reach it. Since 1983, only one player has taken 50 or more shots in a game. Even I can do that math.

Kobe, meet George. (Not Gheorghe.) George, Kobe.

  1. The Rams get the #1 pick as well as 4th and 6th rounders, and in return the Titans get two #1s (one of which is this year's 15th overall, the other is next year's), two 2nd rounders, and two third rounders (one of which is next year's). I can't wait for Barnwell to detail how the Rams got fleeced.

More importantly, I hope things are looking better for the Danimal family.

  2. That's my push back on the love over Kobe's 60 last night. He took 50 shots. 50! An appropriate end to a Lakers season that was just one big Kobe tribute.

By contrast, Steph scored 46 last night on 24 shots.

  3. This puts things in context. The database only goes back to 1983 but you'll get the picture.

  4. It's tough to accurately sum up how historic Curry's season was this year but his numbers do a decent job because they are staggering.

    He hit 400 3s. Shot 50/45/90 and averaged 30/7/5/5.

  5. Steals? Prob not as that would be insanely high.

  6. Rebounds. But he did also lead the league in steals with 2.1.

  7. Oh, the second 5! That would be five made 3s a game.

  8. gotta be the most efficient offensive season in history, right?

  9. Just picked up Quadrophenia and a couple other sweet vinyls in Ellicott City. Kind of a quaint little downtown along a cool stream. Who knew?

  10. I love the Titans trading down. Getting 6 of the top 76 is huge. Too bad they couldn't trade for a competent coach.

I watched the first halves of the Lakers and Warriors games. Kobe was chucking like crazy from the start. He had to get hot to get to a 44% FG percentage (22 of 50). Flea doing solo bass National Anthem was preposterous. I'm upset Magic didn't sweat through his blazer, like he's been known to do in the past.

Big activity day for Team TR this morning. Wife and I took kids on a 90-minute sea kayak trip through a mangrove reserve. Big, fat manatees, dolphins, all kinds of crabs and birds. Good times, but the kids are spent. And Mom and Dad were qualmless about starting the margarita train when the pool bar opened at 11:30 AM after each carrying a lazy kid in our kayak.

  15. Sending good thoughts, prayers, juju, whatever works!! That the recovering continues swiftly and in full! And thinking of all of you supporting him and getting on in the routine of everyday things as you must.
Btw, isn't this Saturday, 4/16, record store day...when albums will be on major sale -- you should have fun shopping on Sat!

  16. Danny Boy, here's some positive brainwaves coming your (his) way. And remember, ginger has a healing quality to it, so all the bourbons and gingers he can stomach. Doc Clarence prescribes it.

  19. Danimal, prayers coming from our way as well. I'm actually going from funeral to cemetery right now in upstate NY as my uncle passed away this week.

  22. I just tried a 100 Grand candy bar for the first time. It wants to be a Krackel and a Twix all in one, and succeeds at neither.

  23. Just saw Flea's national anthem and I for one think it's pretty damn cool. But I can see where non-music heads wouldn't dig it.

TJ, sorry to hear about your uncle.

  24. Clouds hanging over Captiva today, but Team TR reeled in a 3-ft Atlantic sharp nose shark and a 3.5 ft Blacknose shark in the bay. We also got a few bluefish and ladyfish. We also got fish blood all over the place. I wanted to give the boys red war paint, but the wife wasn't having it.

  25. bomani jones just called 'bombs over baghdad' the greatest rap single ever. mark, z - comments? i just listened to it again. it's really fucking great.

  26. I love me some ladyfish. Hard to catch but delicious.

  27. that's as clarence as you can get, right there. peak clarence.

  28. That's been Bomani's opinion for a very long time. It's an amazing song on a number of levels and Outkast are my all time favorite musical act but I'll stop short of calling it the greatest rap single of all time. Definitely high on my list though.

  29. I'm beyond the point of having passionate opinions about the greatest anything of all time. I think that B.O.B. is an acceptable favorite song, for whatever my view is worth, but it isn't mine. It's a damn good song, although I prefer So Fresh So Clean if we're going to review Outkast's catalog, and it probably wouldn't come to top of mind if I were making a list of my personal favorites.
