Snow Day Jams

One of the unexpected side benefits of being forced to spend the better part of six hours (and counting) shoveling snow was getting to catch up on NPR Music's excellent All Songs Considered podcast.

Hosted by DC music veteran Bob Boilen (who's Tiny Desk Unit was the very first band to play at the old 9:30 Club) and Robin Hilton, All Songs is a reliably diverse (if alt-skewing) survey of new music. Their first effort of 2016 featured Glen Hansard covering David Bowie, new music from W&M's own Thao Nguyen and her band, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, Lucius, and Ray LaMontagne, among others.

The latter two feature new sounds, a bit harder than the music that made their names. Quality stuff, both. Check out the podcast here:

And if you just want a little taste, here's Thao & the Get Down Stay Down with 'Astonished Man':

I'll be back with more after my next shoveling session.

  1. Despite following all of the unsolicited advice I posted here, it took me three hours to dig out my driveway and three cars. I feel awful. And we have only two Advil tablets left.

  2. tribe getting buried like the eastern seaboard. can't say i'm surprised at all - they never play well at hofstra, and they had to take a bus through the storm to get there. moving right along. get the next one.

  3. I deserve a burger and brownie sundae after all of the shoveling. And I'm glad I uncovered my car (a convertible) before it ended up like the Washington football team's practice facility.

  4. Manning's already using smelling salts.

  5. Since y'all are sharing your weather updates...we live near Clarence (Newport News) so got less than two inches, and it's sunny now. But we own a house that's currently vacant in the Eastern Panhandle of WV, about 80 miles from DC. It has 40 inches of snow surrounding it. On a hill where the snow drifts. 40. Thinking no one is going to see it, let alone rent it anytime soon!!

  9. Brady and Manning appear to have swapped bodies.

  10. This game is setting up nicely for a back breaking pick six for Manning.

  11. I have been out doing snow duties for neighbors and just saw Brady's stat line. 50 passes and sub 50% completion? Does he look bad or is the Broncos defense that good?

I still assume they will pull it out, just because Brady owns Pey-Pey.

  12. Last night's SNL among the worst in recent 4 maybe 5 years.

  13. Danimal - my inside sources tell me last night's show was doomed by: 1) the storm, which adversely impacted the quality of the studio crowd, 2) Rousey, who tried to be a real actor, and 3) Selena Gomez, who apparently spent the whole week talking to the cast about Bieber, even though nobody cares about anybody else's ex on the show.

Random gossip - Taran Killiam is having a temper tantrum about being bumped as "Trump" by Darrell Hammond, who's both perfect and always ready to appear as Donald (and take the check that comes with it).

  17. Kind of startling how thin our alma mater's rock and roll output is

  18. I'm thinking Panthers -4.5 is the appropriate line for this game. I think Vegas will overvalue the Broncos' D at first.

  19. I watched a lot (too much, actually) of young Vinny Testaverde and this is beyond even his finest work. He went for the full Delhomme tonight and managed to exceed that as well. Pretty damn impressive display of ineptitude.

  20. wife and daughters commandeered the living room television to watch downton abbey and i didn't even care. that was a dismal effort.

  21. Three straight nights of post-boarding beers/scotch/wine has done a number to me and my system. I'm regretting my former love for all the local breweries.

Zman - I will buy you a Hott 22 lap dance and a subsequent penicillin shot to avoid an STD if you shovel out my driveway before I get home on Monday.
