The Twelve Days of Gheorghemas: Day 3

On the third day of Gheorghemas, Big Gheorghe gave to me...

Three catastrophe staches
The Finest Holiday Duet in History
And One Hell of a bloggy Par-ty

We at Gheorghe: the Blog like to make the most out of any situation. When life gives us limes, we make gimlets. So when Hurricane Sandy blew through New Jersey and sapped our power faster than Ian Hymen on a Saturday night, G:TB's Jerseyites made the most of the dim situation (get it?). Absent heat and power, in the face of great difficulty and darkness ... we grew catastrophe mustaches.

The timing couldn't have been better. I shaved cleanly the morning of the storm, October 30, giving me a perfect lead into Movember and making my stache nominally socially acceptable. TR played a similar gambit and we exchanged a few photos along the way via text.

Dave also grew a mustache, but this isn't as impressive because he can grow one at any time -- he balls up his fists, scrunches up his face, and pushes the hair out of his upper lip in the same way that other folks push a recalcitrant turd out of their recta. Instant mustache, although it's more of a Dirty Sanchez according to my metaphor.

The results were electrifying (get it?):

Thus another chapter enters the glorious continuing saga of "gheorghe mustache".

On a more serious note, our outcomes were a lot more fortunate than many others'. There were many terrible stories of great loss and death, thankfully none involving us or those we know. We hope the remainer of 2012 will be comparatively uneventful and we look forward to numerous events of chicanery in 2013, starting with shenanigans scheduled in January, all of which will be summarized in Gheorghemas 2013.

Now I have Heart Sweats stuck in my head. Enjoy.

  1. Squeaky's comment in the last post is accurate in many regards, including the fact that I am ahead of the curve. I checked out DIIV because a WashPo music critic told me they were good, but something wasn't quite right, it seemed too 80s. I will give it another shot.

Japandroids are dope and I should've said that here before if I didn't already. Go get their first album, Post-Nothing, it's more earnest than their second one. My man Danny Elegance had an extra ticket to see them about two years ago and work got in the way (natch) so I couldn't go. I will now redouble my efforts to see them this time around.

  2. i fully expect 'recalcitrant turd' to be a recurring tag.

and much respect to squeak's earlier comment: i've been digging japandroids of late. they make a lot of really fun noise.

  3. japandroids' 'house that heaven built' is on npr music's best of 2012 podcast, which this reviewer highly recommends.

  7. Well at least you had it for a month.

    Looked pretty good on you.

  8. Do you have more faith in the Skins having a five game winning streak... or the Browns having a 4 game winning streak?

  9. i can't believe there is really a movement called "movember" and that it is a portmanteau of mustache and november. are we arware of this at g:tb?

  11. Responding to a post that's now almost a week old--Nice work on the Brubeck tribute. To answer someone's question, Ben's dad, Chris Brubeck, is the guy who looks like Lebowski and who is playing a mean trombone. Memorial service for Dave Brubeck is tomorrow. I'll be raising a glass with Boots on Thursday night.

Interesting side note: My dad worked at the college radio station at Oberlin College in the 1950s as a student. He interviewed Ben's grandfather in 1955 when he was performing at their conservatory. Ben and I figured this out after working together for a few years...we have been able to find tape of Brubeck's performance, but sadly never found tape of the interview.

  12. that story about your dad/brubeck is way cool. and reminds me to save the audio of my interview with lebron james so my grandkids will have blog post material. postcount!

  14. Your dad went to Oberlin? Are you the Alex P. Keaton of your family?

  15. My dad was the 5th generation of his family to go to Oberlin. I broke the trend. It was not as liberal back then. My dad and grandfather voted for Goldwater.

My boy Ben, on the other hand, is the Alex P. Keaton of the Brubeck family...

  16. I first learned of the Japandroids through Chuck Klosterman. He was a really big fan and then went to see them live and ended up liking them less based on their live show (apparently the lead singer talked too much and was annoying), but that's Klosterman and he's a little different kind of guy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, some people are Kloster-phobic and don't like his opinions.

This reviewer gives the Japandroids a B/B- for the only album I've heard (I believe it's their second one). Per Z's comment, I'll dig deeper.

  18. Every single time the kids sing Frosty, after "button nose" I come desperately close to saying "sitting on a ribbed dildo". It's very difficult not to.

  19. "Holy elephant, you have a fat hide" always comes close to getting sung during Silent Night no matter where I am.

  20. "Joy to the World" does it for me. I always hear "You filthy Chi-O whore" sung in the round. In fact I'm no longer sure how the original rated G lyrics go.

  22. I tried to get a picture of the nametag...had a shuttle driver tonight whose name was Czolt Zsabo. True story.

  23. Nice late night check-in at GTB, Danimal. Trying to encourage that from the gang. Rob only checked in late when he was in London and it was already morning there.

  24. pretty cool that he checked in to tell us about a bowel movement, too

  25. ibm recently released a study suggesting that in five years' time, the most important factor in hiring of senior executives will be social media profile. pretty sure that bodes well for the g:tb family.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You guys look creepy with those moustaches.

And, Rob--send me that study--that's good stuff!

  27. It's hard to do this playing only one guitar and drum. It's very exciting!!
