Chrowdsourcing: On the Horns of a Coaching Dilemma

To try to win or not to try all that hard to win, that is the question. And it's a vexing one.

With a come-from-behind 2-1 win last night (the game-winner is posted below for your viewing pleasure - in both of our meetings against these guys, we've scored in the final three minutes to break their hearts) your Huskies clinched no worse than second place in the Dulles District and guaranteed at least one home playoff game. We have one more District game, against the team that's ahead of us in the standings, and which thumped us, 6-1, in our first meeting.

That first contest was marked by a number of unsporting acts on the part of our opponent. In addition to near-constant chirping of the official by players (despite being warned about dissent during the coin toss), they celebrated a penalty kick goal (their fifth of the long-decided match) by doing the worm on the penalty spot. Their coach added insult to injury by leaving his starters in the match until five minutes remained.

I would very much like to beat this team.

Here's where it gets weird. If we do beat them, it'll leave us in a flat-footed tie for the District title, with both teams on 6-1-1 records. The winner of the District regular season title automatically qualifies for the Regional tournament. If the winner of the regular season title makes the District tournament final, the other finalist also qualifies for Regionals.

In the event there's a tie for the District title, the tiebreaker is a playoff game. So if we beat the current first place team at their place, we'd be rewarded by having to play them again to earn the title. If we lose either game, we'd need to win a single home game to reach the Regional tournament - that game will likely be against the team we beat last night - we've beaten and tied them this season, though both games were taut affairs, and we had to come from behind in each to get a result.

Your Fightin' Huskies

To add some context, I think our opponent is slightly better than us. They've scored 27 and conceded seven in their six District games to date. We've scored 11 and conceded eight in seven games (only two in the six games against other schools). The 6-1 score was an anomaly, in my professional opinion, but beating them twice in a few days is a heavy lift.

So here's the question: do I push hard to try to win to set up a playoff for the regular season title, or do I let the chips fall where they may and conserve energy and focus the kids on the District tournament semifinal as our path to Regionals?

  1. You could just put in your equivalent of the Hanson Brothers in this match and inflict enough physical damage that they are hamstrung for the tournament. Who knows? You might even impair them enough that you win this one to boot!

    I have great ideas.

  2. Nice work down the right side to set up the winner.

Can you park the bus and play for 0-0 and keep your powder dry in the event you meet the bullies in the regionals? I certainly get not signing up to face the team twice in a few days.

  3. that's probably what i'll do. pack in and play on the counter, and not get too bent out of shape if it doesn't go our way.

  4. Nice work notching the 69th G:TB post of the year.

    Did You Know???
In 2010, the 69th G:TB post of the year came from a "T.J"... on February 23rd. But those were different times.

The post does still amuse, though. After all, the T in T.J. is for "Timeless."

  6. Charlie Hustle, Shoeless Joe, and the remaining Black Sox are all eligible for HoF entry now. All Pete Rose had to do, all this time, was to die. Not a joke.

  7. i lost the thread of this scenario, but i think go for the win-- you never forget when you beat a team that beat you badly, with unsportsmanlike conduct.

  9. happy husky gameday, friends of the program! non-district matchup on the road against the defending state champs. they're down a bit from last season (losing two division one athletes will do that), but they still have some talent. coach is gonna try to get more of the roster onto the pitch while still maintaining intensity. if you're not following us on instagram at @ths_huskies_girls_soccer, do you even husky?

  10. Good luck to the Huskies! Why wouldn't a group of mostly middle aged men follow a girls high school soccer team?

  13. I saw Bologna v. Pipia one day during my college years. It was held in Sandwich. Super sloppy match, it got ugly.

  16. Rootsy beat me to it - hell of a run down the right side to set up that goal. The camera was pretty far away but that looked really strong in terms of fighting off the defender multiple times and then on the turn into the box.

  17. This new big deal about NFL Schedule release feels like gender reveal fanfare. Was never a thing, it’s a bit overblown, but I guess if you’re super bored it’s fine, and maybe it helps people prepare for events 6 months from now.

  18. the kid who made that run has come a long way in terms of her decision-making. earlier in the season she would’ve shot on goal regardless of the angle. she had assists on both of our goals in the game, which makes her our leader on that category. would not have bet on that a month ago. proud of her.

  19. anti-climactic letdown of an evening for your huskies. came out gangbusters, scored about 10 minutes in. decided to play down to the level of the opponent. gave up a 30-yard banger with four minutes left in the half. Twelve minutes into the second half, lightning showed up. other coach and i looked at the radar and agreed that we should call it. goes down as a tie. unbeaten streak now up to four games. on to the next one.
