It's better to say it's Winn/Gardner, Granderson and Swisher. That is an upgrade from 2009. Granderson replaces Damon's power, Winn/Gardner is a msssive defensive upgrade from Damon and Granderson's speed and judgment in the outfield is an upgrade from Melky's erratic cannon of an arm.
The head-scratcher is the decision to go with Nick Johnson over Damon or Matsui at DH.
Granderson is insanely fun to watch in person, and I agree that he's an upgrade. I guess I don't know enough about Randy Winn to pass legitimate judgment. But he's old, right?
Another head-scratcher is the indication that Winn, a switch-hitter, will platoon with Gardner, a LH hitter. Winn hit .158 from the right side of the plate. Not really a switch-hitter, not much of a platoon advantage. Jerry Manuel would endorse that move.
I figured the Yanks would have bitten the bullet and signed Damon, but I was mistaken.
Then again, I also figured the Mets would realize their pitcher-friendly park and (relatively) big bankroll would give them a head start on signing A-list pitchers. The Mets picked up Kelvim Escobar this winter. Very mice.
They also got slower and worse with the glove. In a pitcher's park. Omar, it's called Monster.com, and I'd get an account pronto.
Gardner has value as a defensive replacement and utility outfielder. The team may trade him soon, anyway. The Yanks realize that it is easy to get a corner outfielder at any time.
Winn's struggles against lefties were a blip last year. Look at prior years. He's 35, But Damon is a beaten-up 36. The signing was an Eff You to Damon and Boras for trying to play hardball with the Yankees. Boras insisted that he wouldn't listen to offers under $13MMM/yr for Damon. The Yanks never blinked at the bluff, so Damon will find himself getting a lot of at-bats for Oakland, Cincy or Tampa for $5MM in 2010.
I like "Eff You's" to Scott Boras, but I love me some Tom Berenger. Platoon was great, he was the cool guy in Greg's fave The Big Chill, and you had to dig him as Jake Taylor, but an unsung cable time-waster is Shattered.
Berenger seemed to have the same career heyday as my man Costner, chronologically speaking, but his was not quite as parabolic.
You obviously didn't get the memo. I'll have the Teej send you a copy. "Post count" is the new tag for "filler" unless it's "Ghostface fillah," of which we haven't had any in a long time. Keep working on those TPS reports.
So ... the 2010 Yankees' OF consists essentially of Randy Winn, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Swisher/Brett Gardner?

ReplyDeleteSomething mildly amusing from MadTv. youtube SFW.
Lame disclaimer: Don't know if it was already posted. Too lazy to search after multiple doctors and ER visits over the past few days.
